| Concertgebouw Brugge: Concert Hall, Bruges, 8000 Bruges, Belgium Friday 24-May-13 08:00pm Brussels Philharmonic: Le Sacre du Printemps At the request of the Concertgebouw, the Venezuelan-Canadian choreographer and dancer José Navas created a personal solo version of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring. On the list of scandalous concerts, The Rite is joined by Bartók’s Miraculous Mandarin. The libretto of the latter disturbed its original audiences with its violence, and the musical setting also made this composition a classic example of expressionism. Nor was scandal absent from Ravel’s La Valse. The work was at the forefront of his feud with Diaghilev, who promptly rejected the work. | ||

Dvořák began his enticing concerto while living in New York, but upon returning to Europe, he learned that a woman he’d once loved had died. His youthful song to her permeates this work. Gramophone called Monsieur Capuçon’s recording of it “magical." Kodály’s Dances of Galánta is raucous yet vibrant, and Bartók’s ballet suite in one act features a huge orchestra playing music with dark and totally dramatic undertones.

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Saturday 8-Jun-13 08:00pm Les Illuminations In Britten’s Rimbaud songs the sensuality of the texts is matched in agile, feverish music for strings which trembles, shimmers and seduces. The French soprano Sandrine Piau, who premiered Colin Matthews’ completion of Britten’s three additional Rimbaud songs, makes her Aldeburgh debut. Judith Weir, citing Tippett’s work as a model, sets a small group of soloists against a larger body of strings in the style of a baroque concerto grosso. Bartok’s masterpiece weaves its magic from threads of folk music, sprightly dance rhythms and a compelling ‘night music’ episode that conjures an atmosphere of fantasy and dreams. ensembles is special enough. That it comes only weeks
before it disbands after a remarkable four decade
career makes this an occasion to savour. The Tokyo
Quartet bring their sumptuous, burnished sound,
precision of ensemble and deep musical understanding
to a compelling programme; Beethoven’s fizzing,
compressed energy, Bartok’s poignant farewell to
the form and Debussy’s only quartet, agile, poetic,
distilling his visionary new musical world into this
most traditional of forms. Groundbreaking, ingenious
masterpieces all three, and a fitting triptych for a
revered quartet’s farewell.

| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Friday 12-Jul-13 07:30pm Martha Argerich and Manchester Camerata In a career spanning more than 50 years, world-renowned Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich has won legions of admirers for her uniquely expressive and spirited performances and her fresh, imaginative recordings. Argerich only rarely visits the UK, which is why MIF is thrilled to welcome her to the city in collaboration with Manchester Camerata for this unmissable concert.Over the years, Argerich has established a number of close working relationships with musicians around the world. One such kinship is with Gábor Takács-Nagy, Music Director of Manchester Camerata, with whom Argerich has performed regularly to brilliant effect. This artistic affinity has inspired tonight’s concert, which features three vital contemporary works that showcase the keyboard in very different ways. Argerich will join Takács-Nagy and Manchester Camerata in Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No.1, a longtime audience favourite celebrating its 80th birthday this year. Either side of this vibrant work, Manchester Camerata will perform Bartók’s Music for Strings, Percussion and Celeste, a brooding masterpiece from 1937; and Arvo Pärt’s rich, powerful Lamentate, for which the orchestra will be joined by pianist David Kadouch, a rising star from his generation. | ||
