| Southbank Centre: Purcell Room, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Sunday 9-Jun-13 01:00pm International Piano Series: Karim Said By the middle of the 20th century Schoenberg's radical legacy had sparked myriad reactions from composers of the next generation. Beginning with the concentrated, edgy Variations by Webern and two pieces by Schoenberg himself, Karim Said has also chosen for this final recital in his series short works by five composers who each took Schoenberg's influence on board in a different way. John Cage's The Perilous Night is a haunting musical meditation on lost love. The piano is 'prepared' to create the illusion of percussion and pizzicato. Stefan Wolpe's Three Pieces for Youngsters offers a taste of this radical Modernist pioneer's colourful creations. The Spanish composer Roberto Gerhard's Three Impromptus hold echoes of Andalusian and Catalan music. And Pierre Boulez rose to the greatest prominence among all the advocates of 12-note music - his 12 Notations, written when he was 20, display dazzling precocity. | ||

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Monday 10-Jun-13 07:30pm Sandrine Piau One of today’s most sought-after sopranos makes her Aldeburgh recital debut in an eye-catching programme. A great communicator who works on the
opera and concert hall stage, her reputation has been founded on superb characterful performances of baroque and classical music. Here however she
allies her sharp-edged clarity and easy unaffected warmth to nocturnal songs from the German Romantic tradition (the young Mendelssohn and Richard
Strauss). These are blended with an intoxicating selection of music from the turbulent decades that straddle the turn of the twentieth century. There is a thrilling potency to every footstep, every new departure taken by the young Berg, Schoenberg and Debussy. By contrast the cool detachment of Bitten’s idiosyncratic folk song arrangements seem to heighten the emotional directness of deeply-rooted opular songs from England, Scotland and the USA. | ||

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Sunday 15-Sep-13 06:00pm Adventurous Acoustic Journey Music for strings from four eras – that’s what the violinist Julia Fischer and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields, the specialist English orchestra for early music, are presenting. The spectrum from Bach to Schoenberg spans almost 200 years, but the relationship is no less plausible than that between Mozart’s B flat major Violin Concerto and the "Metamorphoses" of Richard Strauss: a musical weave that consists of seemingly endless variations and developments – an adventurous acoustic journey.

| Beethovenhalle, Bonn, 53113 Bonn, Germany Tuesday 24-Sep-13 08:00pm Magnum Opus In the third concert of the residency of the Bamberg Symphony Orchestra, the Piano Concerto by Arnold Schoenberg, completed in Los Angeles in 1942, meets Beethoven’s magnum opus, his Ninth Symphony. The political link between the two works is obvious: the Ninth is a masterpiece with a variable reception history, and, not least during the Second World War, was misused for political purposes. Schoenberg’s Piano Concerto addresses the theme of the composer’s situation as an exile. Musically the colourful and expressive work is an example of how twelve-tone music need not be over-intellectual. It does though need high-calibre and intelligent performers: the young French pianist David Fray is precisely the man for the job.

Beethoven was a European composer. German pathos and the French urge for freedom are present in his works in equal measure. That this artist, whose “Ode to Joy” melody is the official anthem of the European Union, still has a meaningful role is demonstrated by the two new piano pieces commissioned jointly by the Beethovenfest Bonn and the Institut français Bonn: musical fireworks to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Elysée Treaty, which pointed the way ahead for both nations.

| Sage: Hall Two, Gateshead, Hill Gate, Gateshead, United Kingdom Thursday 9-Jan-14 08:00pm Transfigured Night In 1899 Schoenberg was falling in love with the sister of a colleague. At the same time he read a poem by Richard Dehmel, telling of a couple walking at dusk in a wood; the woman confesses that she is pregnant by another lover, before the forest fills with moonlight and the man proclaims that the strength of their love will make the child their own. The smitten Schoenberg was inspired to create his most touching work, played here against colourful, rich chamber works by Dvořák and Martinů. Tickets: £16 | ||
