Helmuth Rilling begins by conducting his daughter and son-in-law in Brahms’s darkly lyrical, profoundly symphonic Double Concerto. He will then hand the baton on to his successor Matthew Halls, who leads the chorus and soloists in the vividly contrasting worlds of Brahms’s “Song of Destiny” and Mendelssohn’s joyous Psalm 95, “Come let us sing.” Works by Mendelssohn, Felix (1809-1847)

The Rilling sisters and Adorjan brothers continue that tradition as the Hohenstaufen Quartet, named for the Rilling family’s hilltop retreat. They offer the soaring melodies and sweet sentimentality of Mendelssohn’s Op. 44, No. 2 String Quartet, and Schubert’s epic Quartet No. 15, a spellbinding series of contrasts, expansions, and variations.
