| Montreal Chamber Music Festival at St George's Church, Montreal, QC, 1101 Rue Stanley, Montreal H3B 2S2, Canada Wednesday 29-May-13 08:00pm The Art of Jean-Philippe Collard: Part 2 France has given great gifts to the world and one of them is pianist Jean-Philippe Collard. His elegance, refinement and pianistic style are legendary and we are proud to be able to offer him in concert for a second evening. His chosen repertoire will be French as he touches three of France’s greatest composers: Ravel, Debussy and Fauré.
In this program, Collard is joined by Denis Brott for a performance of Debussy’s Sonata for Cello and Piano written in 1915. Violinist Giora Schmidt and Collard present Ravel’s famous Tzigane and the concert closes with a performance of Gabriel Fauré’s astonishingly beautiful and unmistakably French Quartet in C minor for Piano and Strings.

| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, Belvedere Road, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 30-May-13 07:30pm Salonen conducts the Philharmonia Orchestra London Tonight’s programme marks the centenary (29 May 1913) of one of the most famous premieres in musical history: Stravinsky’s primitivist ballet The Rite of Spring. Showered throughout by a torrential hail of farmyard noises from the gallery, the whole thing ended in uproar with the young conductor, Pierre Monteux, and his musicians fleeing for their lives. Puccini, who was in the Paris audience that night, described it as ‘the creation of a madman.’ Yet Stravinsky claimed that he was merely ‘the vessel through which the Rite passed.’ Opening the concert is Debussy’s no less groundbreaking Prelude à l'après-midi d'un faune. ‘From that moment,’ wrote Pierre Boulez, ‘music began to beat with a new pulse’. | ||

Born in Georgia and trained in Moscow, Elisabeth Leonskaja was much influenced by the great pianist Sviatoslav Richter, with whom she often performed in a duo. Tonight she opens her recital by showcasing three very different composers from the early 20th century, Ravel, Enescu and Debussy, all of whom developed individual harmonic styles that could convey a fabulous range of atmospheres. The second half is devoted to Brahms's finest piano sonata, a five-movement work of immense range, influenced by the strength of Beethoven and the tenderness of Schumann.

| Charlton House, London, Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE, United Kingdom Friday 7-Jun-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Recital - Soprano and Piano Soprano Cheryl Coutinho was born in Poole, England and is of Goan/Portuguese extraction. She recently finished studying for her master’s degree in vocal performance at Trinity College of Music where she was awarded a Gladys Bratton and TCM Trust Scholarship. Cheryl studies voice with Paula Anglin.
Ms. Coutinho performed as Kay Amin, the wife of president Amin in scenes of a new opera, The Last King of Scotland by Stephen McNeff. This was performed at the Royal Opera House, Linbury Studio Theatre, Covent Garden in February 2012.
Cheryl has also toured in Switzerland where she performed a new work by composer Duncan Ward for soprano and brass in concert with the Meridian Brass Ensemble. This particular collaboration has also taken place at the Royal Festival Hall South Bank and at the PAW Festival in Swanage. Other concert performances include El Amor Brujo with conductor Jonathan Tilbrook and the Nottingham Orchestra; A Night of Spanish Song with the Iberian Quintet at the Peacock Theatre; and as a soloist in Mahler’s 2nd Symphony.
Very much at home in the operatic repertoire, Cheryl’s dramatic performances include Mimì (La bohème), First Lady (The Magic Flute), La Ciesca (Gianni Schicchi), Casilda (The Gondoliers), the Countess (The Marriage of Figaro) and Miss Jessel (The Turn of the Screw – Trinity Opera Scenes).
Last year, Cheryl was a semi-finalist in the Trinity College of Music Soloist Competition and this year was a finalist in Trinity’s French Song Competition. Other competitions she has taken part in include Bournemouth Music Festival Competition, New Milton Music Festival Competition and Bournemouth Evening Echo National Competition.
Ms. Coutinho has sung in many master classes with artists such as Simon Keenlyside, Rosalind Plowright, Jonathan Peter Kenny, and Rita Susovsky. She is also a member of the Trinity College of Music Mentor Scheme at Covent Garden’s Royal Opera House and has had the opportunity to shadow many rehearsals and music calls with Willard White, Roberto Alagna and Nina Stemme, among others.
Ffinian Jones began learning the piano at the age of eight and his natural ability soon became evident. He was invited to study performance, composition and history at the Staffordshire Musical Society for talented musicians, and by the age of 15 had already been awarded ABRSM Grade 8 distinction in the piano, cello and alto saxophone. He went on to perform at the Royal Albert Hall, London, The Symphony Hall, Birmingham and the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. A year later Ffinian was successful in gaining a place at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where he studied piano with Murray McLachlan. After his sixth form studies at Chetham’s, he entered Trinity College of Music in London as an undergraduate to study with Philip Fowke, and from September 2009 to January 2010 studied at the Conservatoire National et Superior de Music et Dance de Lyon, France, with Florrent Boffard as part of the Erasmus scheme.
Throughout his career he has participated in many master-classes given by distinguished musicians including Leslie Howard, Anton Kuerti, Phillipe Cassard, Noriko Ogawa, Alexander Ardakov, Mikhail Kazakevich, Deniz Gelenbe, and Douglas Finch. He was also invited to play Ronald Stevenson’s Peter Grimes Fantasy to the composer, who was himself a personal friend of Benjamin Britten.
Ffinian is a keen chamber musician and has formed a long standing duo with Soprano Cheryl Coutinho. The duo focuses mainly on the French and German repertoire and give regular concerts across the UK.
Ffinian's many competition successes include being finalist in the 2008 Il Circolo Competition, winner of the 2010 Trinity College John Ireland Competition, and soloist in Messiaen’s La Ville d’en Haut, held at Blackheath Halls, 2008. Recent appearances have included a performance of Graham Fitkin’s Sciosophy at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, a solo recital at St. Martin in the Fields, and a performance of Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.11, K413 with the Gibbs quartet in Greenwich, London. He was also invited to contribute to a discussion on Liszt in a live interview on BBC Radio 3. He is currently working as a freelance pianist Liszt, Franz (1811-1886), Années de Pèlerinage, Troisième Année: Les jeux d'eaux à la villa d'Este, S 163 no. 4 Price type: Free

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Monday 10-Jun-13 07:30pm Sandrine Piau One of today’s most sought-after sopranos makes her Aldeburgh recital debut in an eye-catching programme. A great communicator who works on the
opera and concert hall stage, her reputation has been founded on superb characterful performances of baroque and classical music. Here however she
allies her sharp-edged clarity and easy unaffected warmth to nocturnal songs from the German Romantic tradition (the young Mendelssohn and Richard
Strauss). These are blended with an intoxicating selection of music from the turbulent decades that straddle the turn of the twentieth century. There is a thrilling potency to every footstep, every new departure taken by the young Berg, Schoenberg and Debussy. By contrast the cool detachment of Bitten’s idiosyncratic folk song arrangements seem to heighten the emotional directness of deeply-rooted opular songs from England, Scotland and the USA.

| Snape Maltings Concert Hall, Snape IP17 1SP, United Kingdom Tuesday 11-Jun-13 07:30pm Piano Century: 1913 - 2013 With extracts from Prokofiev Sarcasms; Schoenberg Five Piano Pieces; Kurtág Jatékok; Harrison Birtwistle Harrison’s Clocks; music by Bartók, Cowell, Stockhausen, Carter, Pierre Boulez, Marco Stroppa, Tristan Murail and George Benjamin; and premieres of new commissions from young composers from the Britten–Pears Young Artist Programme. A centenary tribute with a difference: Pierre-Laurent Aimard leads us on an extraordinary and brilliantly original tour of one hundred years of music featuring over twenty composers in one concert. Aimard’s itinerary takes in Kurtág’s whimsical games and Ives’ quirky fantasias and the ferocious momentum of Harrison Birtwistle and Ligeti. Along the way are fleeting glimpses familiar to Aldeburgh Festival audiences – music from recent guests George Benjamin, Elliott Carter and Marco Stroppa. There are radical new compositional departures distilled at the keyboard in pivotal works by Schoenberg, Boulez and Stockhausen; and Debussy, Murail, and Messiaen finding beauty in the seemingly infinite possibilities within the piano’s harmonic palette. There are moments that seem to question the piano’s role – Lachenmann’s ingenious, Guero – and (in Cage’s now infamous concept) even the nature of music itself. | ||

Colin Matthews Horn Concerto
Jonathan Harvey 80 Breaths from Tokyo (UK premiere)
Scriabin Poem of Ecstasy The power and subtlety of a massive symphony orchestra and its seemingly infinite rainbow of colours are celebrated in a concert that concludes with Scriabin’s poem – a gargantuan journey from earthbound cares to spiritual release compressed into a little over twenty minutes. Colin Matthews’ beguiling work pits soloist against orchestra in a theatrical display, with the soloist moving round the auditorium and his orchestral horns hunting- and haunting – him from offstage. Abrahmsen’s arrangements take Debussy’s delightful piano originals and refashion them into something new. And at its centre, a major new piece from featured composer Jonathan Harvey, a twenty-first century tone poem that is a refined, gently mesmeric ritual.. ‘Breathing’ explains Harvey ‘is behind all music… 80 Breaths for Tokyo is partly the result of the practice of Zen breathing, and partly the result of listening to slow music and enjoying its power over the mind and body’

And Colin Matthews’ arrangements of music by Berg and Debussy Guest Artistic Associate Colin Matthews crafts an ingenious programme that mines the riches of the last hundred years of chamber music repertoire, tracing an elegant arch from the turbulent opening years of the twentieth century to the present day and back again. Framed by tiny masterpieces for a solo instrument, this is a rich tapestry, weaving into its fabric the distilled fervour of Berg and Webern, Knussen and Woolrich’s lyricism, and Stravinsky’s brittle, brilliant pastiches. Matthews’ own music and his arrangements of others takes its place here, as does Britten – some of his earliest chamber music to his last instrumental work. Nods also to Aldeburgh Artistic directors of the past and music from a composer who was a regular visitor and significant presence – Hans Werner Henze. A seamless sequence that seems to shape a new composition from many pre-constructed fragments – the familiar, the re-imagined and the unusual sharing an intimate space without ever jarring or jostling for attention – this is a modernist montage that startles, reveals and illuminates.

| Blythburgh Church, Blythburgh, United Kingdom Friday 21-Jun-13 11:00am Tokyo Quartet The chance to hear one of the world’s finest chamber
ensembles is special enough. That it comes only weeks
before it disbands after a remarkable four decade
career makes this an occasion to savour. The Tokyo
Quartet bring their sumptuous, burnished sound,
precision of ensemble and deep musical understanding
to a compelling programme; Beethoven’s fizzing,
compressed energy, Bartok’s poignant farewell to
the form and Debussy’s only quartet, agile, poetic,
distilling his visionary new musical world into this
most traditional of forms. Groundbreaking, ingenious
masterpieces all three, and a fitting triptych for a
revered quartet’s farewell.

| Britten Studio, Snape Maltings, Aldeburgh, Aldeburgh, United Kingdom Saturday 22-Jun-13 11:00am Piano Century: The Year 1913 Two of the pivotal moments in musical history, from exactly a hundred years ago, thrill in radical and revealing couplings. A mysterious alchemy occurs when orchestral scores are heard played on two pianos. Rhythms become tauter, highly sprung, harmonies crystallise, tiny details of the music’s inner workings emerge with new clarity and focus. Debussy and Stravinsky are heard afresh in piano arrangements by the composers. Zimmerman’s work (itself an arrangement of an orchestral score) teases us with fragments from Beethoven and Bach to Boogie-Woogie and quotes directly from Jeux, with which it shares a fluidity, quicksilver changes of direction and almost improvisatory air. The controlled venom, intricate organisation and relentless impetus of Stravinsky’s infamous Rite fi nd a parallel in Boulez’s innovative Structures – precisely and minutely organised but with a momentum, percussive power and glittering brilliance that makes an explosive, visceral impact. There will be a 30-minute interval. | ||
