| The Hub, Edinburgh, Edinburgh EH1 2NE, United Kingdom Sunday 18-Aug-13 10:00pm Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Marco Stroppa As a prelude to his Queen’s Hall recital on 23 August, renowned French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard takes up residence in The Hub for two late-night concerts celebrating the intoxicating new sound worlds that cutting-edge technology has brought to piano music. Italian composer Marco Stroppa’s dramatic Traiettoria (‘Trajectory’) is like a piano concerto whose orchestra has been replaced by sophisticated electronics, and the piece surrounds its audience with scintillating sounds from all directions. Before it, Aimard performs a selection of Hungarian composer György Kurtág’s aphoristic Jatékók (‘Games’) for solo piano – short, witty pieces that celebrate the sheer pleasure of playing. | Bundeskunsthalle, Bonn, Friedrich-Ebert-Allee 140, 53113 Bonn, Germany Wednesday 11-Sep-13 08:00pm Nobel Prize for Music In 1973 the first Ernst von Siemens Music Prize was awarded – to Benjamin Britten. He has been followed since then by numerous other composers, conductors and instrumentalists, all honoured by the bestowal of what is often referred to as the “Nobel Prize for Music”. The recipient in 1998 was György Kurtág, in 2003 it was Wolfgang Rihm and last year Friedrich Cerha. All three are represented at this concert with works associated and combined with pictures – presented in Bonn in an appropriate setting by recognized specialists. The event is part of the official series of concerts, being held in nine European cities, to mark the 40th anniversary of the Foundation.

She writes: “Everyone has a home: a country, a family, or a kind of music. I am lucky enough to have a home in all three, and there is something of each on this CD. Like a rhapsody, it unites the music of my homeland, my ancestors, the music with which I grew up, and without which I would not be what I am today.” All the more exciting, then, to hear the young virtuoso at the side of her parents, with whom she plays the music of her homeland in a stirring and authentic manner.

| Beethoven-Haus, Bonn, Bonn, Germany Friday 4-Oct-13 08:00pm "metamorphosis" "Imitation and modification” could form the secret heading to a number of Ligeti’s works, above all in relation to the oeuvre of Béla Bartók, who was felt for a long time by many Hungarian composers to be the role model they had to follow. Just as Ligeti, in his string quartet “Métamorphoses nocturnes”, slowly transforms a thematic germ cell into ever new “metamorphoses”, he has also developed the compositional style from the germ cell represented by Bartók. Beiden zoeken in hun muziek stille innerlijke ruimten op, verkennen de ‘chaos in zichzelf’ (Van de Putte). Kurtág balanceert in What is the word – naar Beckett – op de rand van sprakeloosheid.
Met een verdeeld over de zaal opgesteld instrumentarium bieden Kurtágs composities een unieke luisterervaring. Ook de nieuwe liederencyclus van Van de Putte op teksten van de Portugese dichter Fernando Pessoa is een reis naar het binnenste van de klank. Met intuïtieve klankbewegingen volgt de componist de overpeinzingen van deze zonderlinge dichter.
