Arguably the finest-ever American melodist, George once admitted “I have more tunes in my head than I could put down on paper in a hundred years.” Ira (nicknamed “The Jeweler” by other songwriters) crafted the witty lyrics that fit perfectly into George’s timeless tunes. It comes together beautifully in this glittery revue combining the DPO with the prodigious talents of pianist Bates and vocalists Saxon and Cannon. | Dayton Masonic Center, 525 W Riverview Avenue, Dayton 45405-4702, United States Sunday 28-Mar-10 15:00 Graeter's Symphony Sundae: Mozart To open, the music of Beethoven's Coriolan Overture depicts the story of Coriolanus, a Roman patrician banished from his native city as a result of his lack of concern for the starving people there. It's an often stormy essay that interprets the action in the drama. In 1721, J. S. Bach dedicated six orchestral pieces to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg, ostensibly in response to a commission, but more likely as a sugarcoated job application. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major is reminiscent of the Italian concerto, a genre in which Bach "cut his musical teeth." To Robert Schumann, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 was a work of "Grecian lightness and grace," while for a later writer, Alfred Einstein, there are passages that "plunge to the abyss of the soul." Such ambiguity is perhaps apt for one of the greatest works of a composer whose music so frequently defies adequate description. Dayton Philharmonic Neal Gittleman, Conductor

| Dayton Masonic Center, 525 W Riverview Avenue, Dayton 45405-4702, United States Sunday 2-May-10 15:00 Graeter's Symphony Sundae: Schubert The music of Mendelssohn, Mozart, and Schubert comprises the repertoire of this, the final concert of the premiere season of the Symphony Sundae Series. Of Felix Mendelssohn’s Hebrides Overture, published in 1835 under the title Fingal's Cave, Sir Donald Francis Tovey waxed eloquently about what he called "the roar of the waves rolling into the cavern, the cries of sea-birds, and perhaps almost more than anything else, the radiant and telescopic clearness of the air when the mist is completely dissolved or not yet formed." Quite a tone painting indeed! Like his other horn concertos, Mozart composed the Horn Concerto No. 4 for his old friend Joseph Leutgeb, who had moved to Vienna from Salzburg (where he was member of the court orchestra) in 1777, four years before Mozart. Mozart described the concerto as composed for the waldhorn (literally "woods or forest horn"), an alternative name for the French horn that reminds us of the instrument's associations with hunting. As a 19-year-old in Vienna in 1816, Franz Schubert put to paper some 125 songs and over 50 other works for chorus, orchestra, piano, and various chamber ensembles. One of the brightest spots in this virtual avalanche of music is the Symphony No. 5 in B flat major, completed on October 3, a work that sparkles with the clarity and ease of its obvious models, the symphonies of Haydn and Mozart. Our first connecting flight takes us to Vienna following the French Revolution. From this time of great social upheaval comes Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, featuring its central themes of freedom and heroism. Beethoven earned his self-described “martyr’s crown” for the struggles he endured in his quest for perfection. Neal tells this fascinating story of the evolution of the four different overtures written for Fidelio. Dayton Philharmonic Neal Gittleman, Conductor | ||

Then, we’re off to Salzburg, in the year 1774, to eavesdrop on a teenage Mozart who is already crafting symphonies of grace and beauty. To close, the DPO conquers an orchestral pinnacle with Ein Heldenleben (A Hero’s Life) by Richard Strauss. The music portrays a triumphant hero’s victorious odyssey. Who’s the hero of the story? Strauss himself, of course! The Classical Connections concert on February 11th will feature Strauss and this major orchestral work. Dayton Philharmonic Neal Gittleman, Conductor

Then, you’re off to discover two visions of the same country; the America that Dvorák came to visit in 1892, and the America of today. Premiered out of town in 2009 under Neal’s baton, Michael Daugherty’s exciting electric guitar concerto now comes to our stage. Inspired by the quilting community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, this music takes you from rock to blues to classical and back again. Gee’s Bend is the subject of the March 25th Classical Connections (page 9). The same American spirit, albeit with a Bohemian accent, is evident in Dvorák’s not-to-be-missed New World Symphony No. 9. | Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center: Mead Theatre, 1 West 2nd St, Dayton 45402, United States Friday 13-May-11 20:00 Bernstein's Mass On September 8, 1971, a remarkable chapter opened in the history of American music. An amazing work, commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy, premiered at the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. Composed by Leonard Bernstein and entitled MASS: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers, it turned out to be Lenny’s most complex and original creation. Two years later, MASS was premiered in Europe (Vienna) by the Yale Symphony Orchestra. In the orchestra pit was young violinist and Yale student, Neal Gittleman. Using orchestra, chorus, children’s chorus, rock and blues bands, marching band, singers, dancers, and actors, Bernstein tells the powerful story of a group of disillusioned street people who join a visionary leader for a moving voyage of discovery and faith. This groundbreaking creative collaboration between the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and the Wright State University Theatre, Dance and Music Departments promises to be the regional performance event of the season, if not the decade.
