Our first connecting flight takes us to Vienna following the French Revolution. From this time of great social upheaval comes Beethoven’s only opera, Fidelio, featuring its central themes of freedom and heroism. Beethoven earned his self-described “martyr’s crown” for the struggles he endured in his quest for perfection. Neal tells this fascinating story of the evolution of the four different overtures written for Fidelio.

Normally, a weekend’s classical program repeats for both nights, but not this time! We welcome renowned Chopin advocate and gifted pianist Janina Fialkowska for two different programs on the same weekend. Each evening will open with a work written by a composer of Chopin’s era, followed by a solo piano mini-recital, given by the marvelous Ms. Fialkowska. After intermission, Chopin’s two piano concertos will be featured, one on each evening. Chopin, Fryderyk Franciszek (1810-1849), Solo Piano Works Schumann, Robert (1810-1856), Solo Piano Works

Like Berlioz’s overture the evening before, it’s an apt crowd-pleaser meant to transport you to the Romantic Era, a time so important to the development of Chopin’s art. Janina follows with a minirecital that shows the artistic crosscurrents between the solo piano works of Chopin and Mendelssohn (much like Friday evening when she contrasts Schumann’s solo works with Chopin’s). The program concludes with the Polish master’s Piano Concerto No. 1 (actually written after his Concerto No. 2). Chopin, Fryderyk Franciszek (1810-1849), Solo Piano Works Mendelssohn, Felix (1809-1847), Solo Piano Works

The King, in a capricious mood, challenges Bach to improvise a six-voice fugue on an insanely complex theme. An amazing work, commissioned by Jacqueline Kennedy, premiered at the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington DC. Composed by Leonard Bernstein and entitled MASS: A Theatre Piece for Singers, Players, and Dancers, it turned out to be Lenny’s most complex and original creation. Two years later, MASS was premiered in Europe (Vienna) by the Yale Symphony Orchestra. In the orchestra pit was young violinist and Yale student, Neal Gittleman. Using orchestra, chorus, children’s chorus, rock and blues bands, marching band, singers, dancers, and actors, Bernstein tells the powerful story of a group of disillusioned street people who join a visionary leader for a moving voyage of discovery and faith. This groundbreaking creative collaboration between the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra and the Wright State University Theatre, Dance and Music Departments promises to be the regional performance event of the season, if not the decade.
