| Cadogan Hall, London, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Monday 6-Sep-10 01:00pm Proms Chamber Music 8 - Venice: from the streets to the palaces As a curtain-raiser to our 400th-anniversary performance of Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 (see Prom 75), the vibrant French ensemble Le Poème Harmonique conjures up the carnivalesque atmosphere of 17th-century Venice, where the streets and palaces provided a cultural melting pot for the popular and artistic styles of the day. Along with one of Monteverdi’s most famous madrigals, the Lamento della ninfa, the programme includes rarely heard music by Francesco Manelli, the first composer to write operas for the paying public as opposed to the privileged court. | Cadogan Hall, London, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Tuesday 5-Oct-10 07:30pm A Tchaikovsky Celebration Even though Tchaikovsky's musical output consisted of many romantic and memorable orchestral works, his equally well-crafted opera scores are often less well-remembered. The Polonaise from his opera Eugene Onegin is a fine example of his gift for this genre and is a perfect opener to this concert. His Violin Concerto was dismissed and regarded as unplayable and awkward; the Concerto's dedicatee even refused to perform the work. Tchaikovsky thankfully stuck to his laurels and this Concerto has become a firm favourite for the concert platform. Though Tchaikovsky was experencing great emotional pain while writing his 'Pathetique' Symphony, it arguably still remains his dramatic and most inspired work. Tickets £10-£35. | ||

| Cadogan Hall, London, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Wednesday 20-Oct-10 07:30pm Gluck: Orfeo ed Euridice Gluck’s retelling of the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice adds a happy ending to their story of love and loss. This original Italian version, dating from 1762, was a landmark in the development of opera, conveying extremes of human emotion in a simple classical style, most movingly in the famous aria Che farò senza Euridice? The chorus plays an integral part in the opera, as nymphs, shepherds, Furies and Blessed Spirits. | Cadogan Hall, London, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Tuesday 23-Nov-10 07:30pm Jack Liebeck performs Mendelssohn's Violin Concerto Britten's introduction to the orchestra has thrilled audiences young and old over the years with his familiar use of Purcell's grand theme, presented characteristically by each instrument of the orchestra from piccolo to percussion. Equally popular is Mendelssohn's virtuosic Concerto, with its swift and luscious melodies that require great dexterity from the soloist. Schumann's 'Rhenish' Symphony acts as something of a musical journey, portraying scenes from along the River Rhine including the imposing skyline of Cologne with its towering Cathedral.
