| Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Corinthian Chamber Orchestra The Corinthian Chamber Orchestra performs the core of Bernstein’s last concert, given at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony on August 19, 1990 - Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes. This was not planned as Bernstein’s final concert, but by that point he must have known that it would be - he died two months later of advanced lung disease. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony also has particular significance for the CCO, having recorded it with their late Musical Director, Alan Hazeldine, who at the time was fighting a losing battle with lung cancer. Bernstein generously championed many composers, including Samuel Barber. He didn’t premiere the Violin Concerto, but famously recorded it in 1965 with Isaac Stern and the New York Philharmonic. The CCO are joined by Laura Samuel of the celebrated Belcea Quartet to perform this melodious concerto. Corinthian Chamber Orchestra Peter Stark, Conductor Laura Samuel, Violin | ||

| Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, United Kingdom Saturday 20-Mar-10 19:30 St John Passion The Collegium Musicum was an important part of Bach's musical life during his time in Leipzig, but his main employment was that of Cantor to the city's four churches. Bach's cantatas from this period are abundant and sublime but it is perhaps his musical depictions of the Passion of Christ which show the greatest depth and intensity. The St John Passion was performed several times during Bach's time in Leipzig and he continued to revise the work right up to the end of his life. I Fagiolini's perfiormances of pre-classical vocal masterpieces have been rightly praised throughout the world. They are accompanied by Baroque specialists the Feinstein Ensemble. Tickets: £26 - £10. | Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, United Kingdom Wednesday 12-May-10 19:30 Takacs Quartet: Beethoven Cycle 5/6 The intimacy of the four instruments in dialogue proved popular with patrons and audiences alike, and provided wonderful opportunities for wit, drama and structural sophistication - qualities which the Takacs Quartet brings to the fore in its scintillating performances of this repertoire. But Beethoven would take the string quartet into uncharted territory. In the Op.59 Razumovsky Quartets, Beethoven injected new emotional depth and sensitivity into the style. Named after the Russian Count who commissioned them, the Razumovsky Quartets include a recurring Russian theme in his honour. These quartets were as popular in Beethoven's day as they are now - a must-see for anyone wishing to hear Beethoven at his most expressive. Queen Elizabeth Hall at 6.15pm - Pre-concert talk. Imogen performs and directs the orchestra in the majestic and noble ‘Emperor’ concerto. The first half of the programme provides an eloquent contrast with one of the finest and most spirited works of Mozart’s early career, and a major work by on of the 20th century’s greatest composers, Luciano Berio. “The organic power and economy of Beethoven's writing felt more dynamic than ever. Cooper's own rhythmic regeneration of theme and counter-theme, her sense of direction, and her ability to let the music yield and breathe, led to a fearless cadenza with a movingly hushed exit.” The Times.
