Festival van Vlaanderen Brussel & BOZAR Music: KlaraFestival 2010 is off to a riveting start with an integral Mozart programme featuring Concerto Köln, this year’s excellent Artist in Residence. Mozart’s masterful last symphonic work, the Jupiter Symphony, is the cement holding this programme together. The choice of programming is no coincidence, since Mahler owed a large part of his success as a conductor to his rendition of this work. On top of that, opening this year’s festival with such extremely talented people as Simone Kermes and Belgian conductor Frank Agsteribbe is more than just a daring experiment, it is an ode to music and absolute proof that classical music is still alive and kicking. With dissonant chords, romantic love songs and capricious melodies, this trio will immerse you in what could be called the French counterpart to Mahlers German Romanticism. Berlioz was the first of his contemporaries to start making waves - high time for Romanticism! This is exactly why this programme will open with Berlioz’ Nuits d’Eté, moving on to works by Godard, Widor, Fauré and Saint-Saëns to complete a sketch of French Romanticism. The programme will close with Prélude à L’Après d’un Faune, Debussy’s contribution to the ushering-in of a new musical era. This aptly-chosen overview will be performed by Alexis Kossenko, Rémy Cardinale and baritone Alain Buet. Berlioz, Hector (1803-1869), Les Nuits d'Eté, Op.7 (Extracts)

Under the direction of Laurence Equilbey they have amazed both friend and foe with their mosaic of solo songs and transcriptions of orchestral works. They will be presenting an arrangement of Mahler’s Third Symphony specially composed for the KlaraFestival. The uncontested highlight of this evening will be Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen, an enchanting song about allowing yourself to release your attachment to the world. Mahler said: “This song expresses verything I am” Works by Wolf, Hugo (1860-1903) (Im stillen Friedhof / Die Stimme des Kindes / Frülingschor) Works by Liszt, Franz (1811-1886) (Rêve d’Amour/ Cantique d’amour) Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911), Rückertlieder: Ich bin der Welt abhanden gekommen ((transcr. Commissioned by the publishing firm Thomson and at the recommendation of Haydn, Beethoven made arrangements of a collection of Scottish folk melodies. These simple, moving songs will be followed by one of Mendelssohn’s most famous works, presented in an unknown version for piano, flute and cello. This original work from 1840 was only discovered a few years ago and, according to Kossenko, is one of the ‘most beautiful pieces of chamber music for fl ute from the 19th century’. With its powerful, effervescent and melancholy tones this work creates a compelling atmosphere. Works by Mendelssohn, Felix (1809-1847)

An inspiring conductor? We’ve got it! Rising star Yannick Nézet-Séguin has already made an enormous impression with his interpretation of Mahler – ‘so poignant it is guaranteed to make you cry’, according to Dutch daily newspaper the Volkskrant. Resurrection was the title Mahler gave to his majestic Second Symphony. The music paints a staggering vision of life after devastation and, accordingly, the symphony ends with a glorious conquest over death, with Sterben wird ich um zu leben as its climax. Mahler pulls out all the stops: ‘Aufersteh’n, ja aufersteh’n wirst du’.

The most famous virtuoso performer of this time was, without a doubt, Franz Liszt - and everything points to the Doppler brothers taking as a model not only his skill as a performer, but also as a composer. Their works, based on Hungarian melodies, create a world of 19th century festivities and light-headed Romanticism. With fast-moving chords, flashy trills and unpredictable rhythms, these musicians will give you a marvellous taste of their technical virtuosity.

His work refers to alienation and discovery. Sur Mi, in which Boesmans flouts musical conventions and where any form of repetition is prohibited, found its inspiration in an etude by Debussy and explores the idea of recognition and reference points. Ornamented Zone was composed for an instrumental ensemble with a slightly nostalgic twist; the piece explores the limits of ornamentation in a refi ned and harmonious way. The Sextuor à clavier was composed consciously for a conventional instrumental ensemble, in which Philippe Boesmans, for an instant, sets aside the palette of colours that is so typical in contemporary music. | De Munt | La Monnaie: Fiocco Hall, Brussels, Rue Leopoldstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Monday 13-Sep-10 12:30pm The Dreams of Schubert The Italian pianist Stefania Neonato was a laureate of the 2007 International Pianoforte Musica Antiqua Brugge. This is sure to be a promising evening! Her pet subject is the original aesthetics of 19th century piano playing: rest assured that this programme of music by Schubert is based on the greatest possible expertise. The emotional impact of Schubert’s melodies has always been uncontested, but his musical language only fully evolved with the emergence of a new musical form: Romantic genre works. These short but independent pieces often refer to dance rhythms, as you will hear in the Moments Musicaux and the 12 German Ländler. The last piece on the programme, Schubert’s well-known first piano sonata in A minor serves as a perfect showcase for the composer’s masterful use of rhythmic motifs.

| Flagey, Brussels, Place Saint-Croix / Heilig Kruisplein, 1050 Brussels, Belgium Monday 13-Sep-10 08:00pm Das lied von der erde “Ewig…, Ewig…”. These prophetic words close Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde, one of the last great masterpieces of German Romantic music. Nowhere are life and death as closely intertwined as in this work. Taking Chinese poetry as a point of departure, Mahler says farewell to life in six movements. It is a farewell that lingers: slow and permeated with resignation, knowing that the earth will remain forever. The KlaraFestival has opted for the more intimate chamber music adaptation by Schoenberg for mezzo-soprano, tenor and ensemble. Young world-class soloists were contracted especially for this occasion, among them mezzo-soprano Kristina Hammarström and cellist Gavriel Lipkind. This ensemble will be conducted by Mahler specialist Yoel Gamzou. | ||

This is certainly peculiar, since it is of a very high quality. Mahler thought so; he once called the young Korngold a genius. We invite you to become acquainted with this composer through his suite for piano and violin, commissioned by the Vienna Burgtheater in 1918 and originally intended as a full orchestra work to accompany a theatrical performance of Shakespeare’s Much Ado About Nothing. Mahlers unfinished Piano Quartet has also been highly underexposed. Feel the burgeoning talent of a great master in this passionate, sensual early work in the capable hands of the excellent soloists Håkon Austbø and Benjamin Schmid.

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Tuesday 14-Sep-10 08:00pm Beethoven Mahler considered Beethoven to be one of his greatest sources of inspiration. Beethoven’s famous Triple Concerto for violin, cello, piano and orchestra stands unique as the only one of its kind. Although the concerto belongs to his heroic period, the Seventh Symphony is generally categorized under what is called his middle period and arose from of a previous interest taken in chamber music. “This work is a joy to listen to” exclaimed 19th century critics. Wagner even called it an “Apotheosis of dance”. Like no other, Giovani Antonini, founder of Il Giardino Armonico, knows the secrets of this multi-faceted work. Temperament and energy go hand in hand with this Baroque specialist, as well as the young Argentine goddess of cello Sol Gabetta and piano virtuoso Dejan Lazic. | ||

His long, chromatic melodies incorporate traditional Polish elements; a typical form of exoticism within Romantic art. Nelson Goerner will be bringing Chopin’s work to life on a historically restored piano. “Seething with passion, his fi ngers glide across the keys with the greatest virtuosity, taking you along in a cascade of wonderment, anger and suspense, exhibiting the most amazing technical skill!” [La Gaceta on Nelson Goerner, 14 September 2008]

The programme will begin with Bizet’s Symphony in C Major, a glorious work written by the composer at the tender age of seventeen, followed by Dvorák’s enchanting Serenade for Strings, for a little variety and lightness. Next on the programme is an overture by Wagner. Bruckner always classified Mahler as one of the modernists, but Mahler himself considered himself to be a follower of Wagner in terms of style. The intimate nature of Mahler’s Rückert Lieder, for instance, shares many of the characteristics one would expect to fi nd in a Wagner lullaby. It is up to Werner Güra to escort us into this world of sound!

Daniel Sepec agrees with him wholeheartedly in this respect. This duo sheds new light on Schumann’s work, with passion, erudition and an unprecedented degree of versatility. Piano and violin appear to be engaged in a wild hunt towards the end of this capricious and virtuoso sonata. “Fanaticism and perfect attention to detail go hand in hand with an impressive sense of phrasing and enormously long lines; their concentration never leaves off, not even for an instant.” [Aart van der Wal on Staier, Opus Klassiek]

| De Munt | La Monnaie: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Thursday 16-Sep-10 08:00pm Recital Marie-Nicole Lemieux Vienna and Paris, the two musical metropolises at the turn of the century, are the point of departure for a recital in the Monnaie Opera House featuring works by several lesser-known composers. It has only been fairly recently that the songs of Alma Mahler were given the attention they deserve and an increasing number of musicians has derived enormous fulfi lment from the seemingly endless melodies and surprising harmonic transitions that are so typical of her work. Since her debut appearance at the Queen Elisabeth international competition, Marie-Nicole Lemieux has impressed listeners with her rich, full-bodied voice – with just the right colour for the late Romantic repertoire. Accompanied by Daniel Blumenthal at the piano, Lemieux will sing 19th century songs written by Mahler’s wife Alma and several French contemporaries from France: Franz Schreker is a seldom-heard, but no less welcome composer of Lieder. His work will be fl anked by that of his Parisian counterparts Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson, as well as Belgian composer Guillaume Lekeu, who tragically died too young and wrote both the text and music of his captivating Trois poèmes. You may be assured that Alma Mahler’s musical pearls will overwhelm you with their forceful lyricism, daring chromatic harmony and – according to La Scena Musicale – their “deep and complex emotions”. It is still confounding that Gustav Mahler required her to give up composition as a condition for their marriage! Mahler, Alma (1879-1964), Fünf Lieder | ||

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Thursday 16-Sep-10 08:00pm Life after death Mahler concentrated for many years on the work of poet Friedrich Rückert – a somewhat conservative choice for a composer who fl irted with modernism. Even when he did not mean to do so, Mahler still wrote primarily about himself. Shortly after the Kindertotenlieder were completed Mahler’s daughter died. In the words of the composer: “Writing these songs was painful, and it will also be painful to hear them”. The Kindertotenlieder, laden with emotions prove that music as heavy as lead can contain the lightness of genuine beauty. With Pecková’s voice rising above the thinned-out timbre of the deFilharmonie orchestra conductued by Herreweghe, this will be a very rewarding evening. Music by Mahler’s teacher, Anton Bruckner will also be featured on tonight’s programme. | ||

Like Maeterlinck himself, their repertoire reflects the transition from Romanticism to Expressionism. Their first concert should prove exactly what they mean to achieve. Writing in the tradition of Brahms, Zemlinsky had to wait until his death for recognition. This is certainly peculiar, because his string quartets give voice to a fascinating and many-faceted personality. Besides being contemporaries of Zemlinsky, Arnold Schoenberg and Alma Mahler-Werfel were also his pupils: exactly the triangle that the Maeterlinck Quartet will be exploring.

As he brought an era to a close, Mahler also paved the way for the next one: with his unfinished Symphony No. 10, he went to the outermost bounds of tonality and thus cleared the path to a new type of music. Just a century later, the atonal music of the Second Viennese School – for example Berg’s Orchesterstücke – connects logically and almost seamlessly with Mahler. Echoes may be heard as far away as in Philippe Boesmans’ Trakl-Lieder, in which the poetry of Austrian poet Georg Trakl further reinforces this link. ‘Mahler built bridges to the music of the future’ (Alma Mahler).

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Wednesday 6-Oct-10 08:30pm Brahms, the Progressive Schoenberg openly acknowledged the influence of Brahms, finding inspiration particularly in his sense of thematic construction, progression and transition. This programme illustrates the continuity and not the break between the two composers, with Brahms having laid the foundations for a new type of music. Schoenberg had outlined the composition of his Kammersymphonie Nr.2 thirty years before finishing it in 1939. The work is above all in keeping with a melancholy spirit in which sombre resignation gradually emerges. The Doppelkonzert in a-Moll is the last concerto by Brahms, and proposes an orchestra size which was uncommon during the romantic period. Symphony No. 4 is also his last orchestral work. At once energetic, tormented, lyrical and noble, this symphony brilliantly combines classical form with profoundly original writing. Production La Monnaie | ||

| De Munt | La Monnaie: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Monday 11-Oct-10 08:00pm Recital Sally Matthews ‘You came, and the night resounded as gentle as a fairytale melody…’. Alban Berg’s intimately romantic Sieben frühe Lieder continue to beguile both audiences and performers even now, more than a century after their composition. Canteloube’s Chants d’Auvergne sound equally intimate and romantic; this is a collection of folksongs in the Occitan dialect which share only a few common points with Berg’s work. The melodies of both Brahms and Fauré are rightly considered the high point of vocal chamber music: these two composers weave form, harmony and pianistic features into a close synthesis. We still remember Sally Matthews’ recent debut at La Monnaie as an energetic Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress. Now she is giving a varied recital accompanied by Simon Lepper.
