| Southbank Centre: Royal Festival Hall, London, London SE1 8XX, United Kingdom Thursday 17-May-12 07:30pm Philharmonia Orchestra After the first performance of his Fifth Symphony, composed between 1901 and 1903, Mahler is said to have declared, “Nobody understood it. I wish I could conduct the first performance fifty years after my death.” More than a hundred years after his death it is certainly recognised as one of the most emotionally complex and ambitious symphonies of the 20th century. From its famous funereal opening trumpet solo to its blazing finale, it encompasses an extraordinary range of styles and moods. At its heart is the Adagietto, an extended love poem to his wife Alma, who he met in 1901 and proposed to just three weeks after their first meeting. | Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Thursday 17-May-12 07:30pm The Hallé perform Borodin and Tchaikovsky Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé present a White Night of great Russian music. Borodin’s overture for his nationalistic opera Prince Igor begins in sombre fashion before fanfares herald a succession of unforgettable (and very Russian) themes. The same composer’s Second Symphony is equally striking and concludes with an irrepressible finale. In 2009 Sofya Gulyak became the first female winner of the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition. Here she joins the Hallé in a performance of her compatriot’s enthralling Concert Fantasy, a work now enjoying a long-overdue revival. The splendid 1812 Overture rounds off the evening in the most stirring fashion. This programme is also performed on Wednesday 16 and Sunday 20 May 2012 at The Bridgewater Hall, Manchester. Tickets from £9.50. | ||

Anton Bruckner wanted similar sincerity from his Requiem, and cast it in the same grave D minor key as Mozart’s, creating an austere and deeply moving setting of an immortal text.Image credit: © Dan Brady | ||

| Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester, Manchester, United Kingdom Friday 18-May-12 07:30pm RNCM Symphony Orchestra with Gergely Madaras Prokofiev’s second Piano Concerto opens tonight’s proceedings, a composition notable for its terrifyingly difficult solo part and, especially, for the maniacal demands of the opening movement’s cadenza. Written for the Paris-based Ballet Russe, The Firebird made Stravinsky famous overnight. A straightforward fairytale – the firebird helps a young prince to rescue a beautiful princess from an evil ogre and win her heart – Stravinsky’s score is packed with orchestral colour that brings every part of the story to vivid life. Much of the musical language owes much to the composer’s teacher, Rimsky-Korsakov, yet there is much more besides: Debussy for one was thrilled by the score’s latent barbarism and revelled in its ‘unusual combinations of rhythms’. | St John's College Chapel, Cambridge, Cambridge CB2 1TP , United Kingdom Friday 18-May-12 08:00pm The Sixteen's Choral Pilgrimage 2012: The Earth Resounds Conductor: Harry Christophers World-renowned choir The Sixteen is delighted to present the 12th Choral Pilgrimage, The Earth Resounds. Featuring arguably the three most celebrated composers of the Franco-Flemish school of the Renaissance, the programme is centred around movements from the 12-part Missa Et ecce terraemotus by Brumel (the ‘Earthquake Mass’). After Josquin, Brumel is considered one of the greatest composers of his generation. Lassus, writing some 30 years later, was influenced by both composers and is known to have performed in the Brumel mass.
Conductor Harry Christophers says:
‘For this Choral Pilgrimage, I have decided to explore the sacred music emanating from Flanders in the 15th and 16th centuries. This extraordinary music spans 100 years of innovation and brilliance.
Josquin, Brumel and Lassus were truly European composers, leaving their origins to work in the top establishments of Aix-en-Provence, Ferrara, Rome and Munich. Their music has a unique sonority which I believe will astound you all - from the depth of expression and fascinating texts of Josquin to the overtly decorative mass movements of Brumel’s Missa Et ecce terraemotus.
We really do have a wealth of simply glorious music for you which I have no doubt will enrich all our lives. Once again let our pilgrimage bring this great music back to the buildings for which it was written.’

| Queen's College Chapel, Oxford, Oxford OX1 4AW, United Kingdom Friday 18-May-12 08:30pm Oxford Baroque: Santa Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi - an oratorio by Giovanni Lorenzo Lulier This seventeenth-century biographical oratorio based on the Italian saint, Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi, will be introduced by Jeremy Summerly and performed by Oxford Baroque. The music is highly attractive, even though Lulier is less than a household name. Having been a student of Pietro Simone Agostini, a composer and violin virtuoso in the service of Pietro Ottoboni, Lulier played regularly between 1676 to 1699 in the Roman church of San Luigi dei Francesi. It is known that from 1681 he was employed by Benedetto Pamphili and played the trombone in the Musici del Campidoglio. In the 1690s he also worked for the Borghese family, and played the cello and bass in the orchestra in alongside another Pamphili protégé - the better known Arcangelo Corelli, who was its principal violinist. The oratorio - one of eight such works by Lulier which survive - received its premiere at the Palazzo Cardinale Medici, on 9 June 1687. It survives in two sources, one made in Modena in 1688 and another later score, dating from 1705, which is in Florence. Sections of the work have been performed in Italy, but this is the first time the work has been performed in its entirety in a brand new edition specially prepared by Andrew Cichy, in collaboration with Oxford Baroque. | ||
