| Wigmore Hall, London, United Kingdom Monday 28-Jun-10 13:00 Lars Vogt, piano Lars Vogt has established an enviable international reputation as one of the leading pianists performing today. He is equally at home in concerto and recital repertoire, and for his BBC Lunchtime Concert he combines the evergreen set of Impromptus which for many contain the essence of Schubert’s pianistic genius with the effulgent flowering of Schumann’s uniquely structured Fantasy in C. | Wigmore Hall, London, United Kingdom Tuesday 29-Jun-10 19:30 Miklos Perenyi cello; András Schiff piano As a grand finale to the Wigmore Hall celebration of Beethoven’s Chamber and Instrumental Works, renowned Hungarian pianist András Schiff shares the platform with his cellist compatriot Miklós Perényi. Their recordings are testimony to their deep intuitive understanding of the cello-andpiano repertoire and are sure to reward subscribers to this series with an outstanding survey of Beethoven’s complete works for these instruments. The five sonatas neatly span his entire career, ranging from the two experimental works of Op. 5, via the gloriously lyrical middleperiod masterpiece which is Op. 69, to the concentrated vision of Op. 102. Three sets of variations and the rarely heard transcription for cello of the early horn sonata set a seal on a feast in store. Miklós Perényi, Cello András Schiff, Piano | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Tuesday 29-Jun-10 19:30 Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Yuri Temirkanov - 3 Tchaikovsky's Sixth Symphony ends with some of the most anguished music ever written by the composer. It closes with a quiet adagio which disappears into silence, collapsing under the weight of the tragic tone which echoes throughout the work. Tchaikovsky was immensely proud of the work, writing, 'I definitely find it is my very best, and in particular, the most sincere of all my compositions. I love it as I have never loved any of my musical children.' Yet just nine days after conducting its premiere, the composer died. The second performance of the work took place 20 days later at a memorial concert. The mood of tonight's concert is lifted with Prokofiev's Second Piano Concerto, a work of fiendish virtuosity and humour. | Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Thursday 1-Jul-10 19:30 London Philharmonic Orchestra with David Murphy The season ends with a new beginning. Ravi Shankar has been edging towards the creation of a symphony for decades: first came his virtuosic duets for sitar and violin written for performance with Yehudi Menuhin, then came the two thematically accomplished Concertos for Sitar and Orchestra. After years of collaboration with Philip Glass, the two composers are heard together here: the pulsating, lyrical groove of Glass’s Violin Concerto meets the world’s first performance of Shankar’s Symphony, which explores both the rich melodic heritage and the mathematical precision of Indian music and is an event of huge significance for world music. Adams worked with repeating loops of oscillations on string instruments for some time before Shaker Loops took its final form. The name reflects the 'shaking' of the strings oscillating between notes and the way Shakers danced to repetitive, energetic music. Tickets £9 - £38. This year, Ensemble 360 tours a programme of superb and unjustly neglected works. Prokofiev’s Quintet for strings and wind was commissioned as part of a circus themed ballet called Trapeze and as a result is a quirky, fun work. Martinu finished his Nonet for nine instruments just before his death. It looks back to some of his inspirations: the music of Haydn and tunes from his Czech homeland. Schumann’s Piano Quintet is widely thought to be one of his greatest works. Ensemble 360 | ||

| Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona 08002, Spain Saturday 3-Jul-10 20:00 War Requiem Benjamin Britten's War Requiem (1962) is a great «mass for the dead» in which the Latin liturgical texts alternate with poems in English by the soldier, poet and pacifist Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), who died in action a week before the armistice that brought the First World War to an end. Britten - who was acknowledged as the leading British composer, both at home and in the United States – had been commissioned to write it for the consecration of the new Coventry Cathedral, built alongside the ruins of the old cathedral that had been destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. Britten, a convinced pacifist, chose to write a work of reconciliation, over and above the horrors of war. Thus his requiem is not a tribute to British soldiers and heroes, as might be expected, but a statement of his opposition to all armed conflicts. For that reason he called upon three vocal soloists belonging to different nationalities involved in the war: the Russian soprano Galina Vishnevskaya (who was ultimately denied permission to leave the USSR), the German baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and the English tenor Peter Pears. The cast and musicians are divided into groups: the chorus, soprano and main orchestra interpret the liturgical texts in a tone of supplication and repentance; the same texts are given to the chorus of boy sopranos and the organ, who represent life after death; and the male soloists, who embody the victims of the fighting, sing Owen's texts to the accompaniment of a chamber orchestra. It is an imposing, highly varied, and deeply symbolic work and one of the masterpieces of the 20th century. She crosses the Cold War divide here to penetrate the dark mysteries of the late Violin Sonata by Shostakovich. | Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona 08002, Spain Tuesday 6-Jul-10 20:00 War Requiem Benjamin Britten's War Requiem (1962) is a great «mass for the dead» in which the Latin liturgical texts alternate with poems in English by the soldier, poet and pacifist Wilfred Owen (1893-1918), who died in action a week before the armistice that brought the First World War to an end.
