Charlie Chaplin's The Gold Rush Charlie Chaplin in The Gold Rush Most people know Chaplin as a comic genius. Fewer people realize he wrote the music for his films. The Gold Rush is the movie Chaplin said he would most like to be remembered for. In scene after scene— including one in which the little hobo transforms a shoe into a feast fit for a king—this 1925 silent-film classic virtually defines visual comedy. Along with our screening of The Gold Rush, the SFS plays Chaplin’s original score.

Fragrant Flora - depictions of Flora in music From beautiful and delicate to steadfast and timeless, the aromatic to images of rebirth, various flora have been used as metaphors in poetry, art and music for centuries. The recital highlights how different composers have chosen to depict flora in music to create moods, arouse images and express love.
Beautiful and wonderfully varied music is drawn from Arne, Couperin, Van Eyck, Hasse, Handel and Pepusch's wonderful spring cantata 'Fragrant Flora'.
Tickets include a pre-concert glass of wine, and guests are invited to join the artists in the Club's private bar after the performance

Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Tugan Sokhiev Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring was premiered in Paris on 29 May 1913, a date made famous by one of the most notorious riots in musical history. The work opened the doors to the 20th century and has become an icon of modernism thanks to the brutal, exhilarating dissonances and to the complex rhythms from whose ruthless momentum the work derives its unique power.

Bittersweet Symphony Richard Strauss once boasted that he could depict even a knife and fork in music – so when he sets out to portray death and eternity itself, you’d expect something pretty spectacular! Tod und Verklärung is just that – a sweeping orchestral showpiece in which philosophy comes a long way behind sheer, glorious sound.
Brahms’ glowing second symphony is all about colour too, a gorgeously ripe celebration of all things mellow and melodious. It’s perfect for the young British maestro Robin Ticciati, making a welcome return to the Phil.
And it’ll be balm for the soul after Mahler’s heartbreaking songs, with the superb British baritone Christopher Maltman making his Liverpool debut.

Ax plays Beethoven Poor Petrushka: He's just a pitiful klutz who doesn't have a chance with the Ballerina, who is more taken with the Moor's earthy masculinity. Stravinsky's still-startling score from 1911 blew the dust off the Punch and Judy tradition once and for all, creating a tragicomic masterpiece of staggering inventiveness. Opening the program is Ravel's tender Mother Goose Suite composed in 1910, originally for piano duet, with pieces inspired by the famous children's stories. American pianist Emanuel Ax joins Maestro Dutoit and the Orchestra for Beethoven's B-flat-major Concerto, the perfect amalgam of Classical charm and Beethovenian bite.

The Complete Ma Vlast with Nikolaus Harnoncourt More than Janáček, who witnessed Czechoslovakia’s independence in 1918, and even more than Dvořák, who established an international career for himself, Bedřich Smetana was considered to be the face of national Czech music. The best-known homage to his fatherland took the form of a cycle of six symphonic poems entitled Má vlast (‘My Fatherland’), in which he expresses his views on his country’s past, present and future. The last time the orchestra performed the full cycle was under Antal Dorati in 1986.

Royal Philharmonic Orchestra The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra celebrates the music of Dmitri Shostakovich. The composer's son, Maxim Shostakovich, opens the concert with the vivacious Festive Overture, written in only three days to commemorate the 37th anniversary of the October Revolution. The Second Piano Concerto is dedicated to Maxim and he gave the premiere in 1957 when he was just 19 years old, two years younger than this evening's mercurial soloist, Natasha Paremski. Shostakovich's powerful Fifth is the best-known of all his symphonies; its incredible finale hinting at the triumph of culture and optimism over the barbarism of Stalin and his regime of terror.
