Bach's St Matthew Passion This performance heralds a return to the Bach tradition, established in 1891 when Julius Röntgen conducted the St Matthew Passion in Amsterdam for the first time. From 1899, it became an annual event. More recently, Nikolaus Harnoncourt spiced things up by alternating St Matthew with St John and even by conducting MacMillan’s St John Passio last season. Now the ‘authentic’ St Matthew is back. This collaboration features the Canadian early music specialist Bernard Labadie, assisted by musicians including James Gilchrist and Florian Boesch, who were also guests in 2007.

Graeter's Symphony Sundae: Mozart To open, the music of Beethoven's Coriolan Overture depicts the story of Coriolanus, a Roman patrician banished from his native city as a result of his lack of concern for the starving people there. It's an often stormy essay that interprets the action in the drama.
In 1721, J. S. Bach dedicated six orchestral pieces to Margrave Christian Ludwig of Brandenburg, ostensibly in response to a commission, but more likely as a sugarcoated job application. Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 in G major is reminiscent of the Italian concerto, a genre in which Bach "cut his musical teeth."
To Robert Schumann, Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 was a work of "Grecian lightness and grace," while for a later writer, Alfred Einstein, there are passages that "plunge to the abyss of the soul." Such ambiguity is perhaps apt for one of the greatest works of a composer whose music so frequently defies adequate description.

Rachmaninov: Isle of the Dead - Beyond the Score Rachmaninov composed his tone poem The Isle of the Dead in 1909, while living in self-imposed exile in Dresden. He was inspired by an engraved version of a famous painting by the Swiss symbolist Arnold Böcklin, depicting a mythical island honeycombed with ancient tombs. A mysterious boat rows toward the island, bearing a coffin with the body of an unknown man. The composer creates an epic barcarolle of mourning, an imagined vision of impending death and a lamentation for the life that every human soul must leave behind. Inspired by orchestras in Germany, whose rehearsals he spent many hours observing, he developed in this music a new palette of orchestral sound and texture—deeply sensuous, mysterious and suggestive.

Virgin of all virgins blest It is no accident that Dvořák’s oratorio Stabat Mater has become the signature work of Brno’s Easter Festival: each repeat performance brings a new perspective on one of the classic works of the world repertoire, while always managing with convincing urgency to return to this deeply human theme: fear of death and reconciliation with its inevitability, and also – and mainly – the indescribable pain of a mother, and the redeeming power of our empathy with her suffering.
