| Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Verizon Hall, Philadelphia PA 19102, United States Friday 12-Mar-10 14:00 Vänskä conducts Sibelius Osmo Vänskä, the charismatic Finnish-born music director of the Minnesota Orchestra, brings music of his native land to The Philadelphia Orchestra. The warm austerity of Sibelius's Symphony No. 2 from 1900 finds foil in Minea, a new work by contemporary Finnish composer Kalevi Aho. The prolific Aho, who at 14 symphonies has already doubled Sibelius's seven, has established a musical voice as piquant and distinctive as that of his famous forerunner. Joining Vänskä for the hypnotic Piano Concerto No. 2 of Franz Liszt (whose Hungarian lineage links him linguistically, at least, to the Finns) is French pianist Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, in his Philadelphia Orchestra debut. Schumann’s bicentennial is marked by this mini-marathon exploring the breadth of this quintessentially Romantic composer’s oeuvre, including some of the best-known works: Piano Quartet, Op. 47; Frauenliebe und leben; Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13; Lieder und Gesange aus Wilhelm Meister, Op. 98A; Carnaval, Op. 9; Fünf Stücke im Volkston, Op. 102; Marchenbilder, Op. 113; and more. An opening panel discussion with performers and music historians gives insight into the remarkably fertile yet troubled mind of this singular composer. | Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Friday 12-Mar-10 19:30 London Philharmonic Orchestra with Gunther Herbig Schumann’s unflinching adoration for his pianist wife Clara is the spark behind his Piano Concerto, a love-letter in music that offers a touching insight into one of the most famously passionate romances of the nineteenth century. But Schumann also took the young Johannes Brahms very much to heart, who he said would ‘spring like Minerva from the head of Jove’ to take the compositional world by storm. He was only partly right; Brahms’s First Symphony (heard on 11 December 2009) took him a painstaking fourteen years to write. But his Second did indeed spring forth like Minerva, flowing as seamlessly as a stream, abounding in pure, exhilarating joy. Tickets £9 - £38. | Barbican Centre, London EC2Y 8DS, United Kingdom Friday 12-Mar-10 19:30 Emmanuel Ax and Dawn Upshaw More even than the Mazurkas and Polonaises – both Polish dance forms – Chopin's songs capture the essence of his affection for his homeland. All of them – and only 19 survive – set poetry by Polish writers, all of whom were Chopin's contemporaries. Not published by the composer, and only composed as and when he felt sufficiently inspired, they perhaps offer an intimate glimpse into his private thoughts. His Nocturnes, beautifully-crafted miniatures, are rightly among the most treasured pieces in the piano repertoire. That is a place undoubtedly held by Schumann's songs within the lieder repertoire. His skill for capturing the essence of a text, of instantly evoking the appropriate atmosphere – whether light-hearted or introspective – is almost unrivalled among Romantic composers. Osvaldo Golijov – the final composer in this series to write a work inspired by Chopin and Schumann – draws on eclectic musical and cultural references for inspiration, as well as on the voice of soprano Dawn Upshaw, who joins Emanuel Ax for this evening's concert. Golijov, Osvaldo (b. 1960), Other (New Work, UK Première) Schumann, Robert (1810-1856), Other (Selection of works for solo piano) Bach, Johann Sebastian (1685-1750), Other (Selection of works for solo piano) Emanuel Ax, Piano Dawn Upshaw, Soprano | ||

| Colston Hall, Bristol BS1 5AR, United Kingdom Friday 12-Mar-10 19:30 London Symphony Orchestra It’s nearly a quarter of a century since the LSO’s last visited the Hall and it’s returning with a bang! Sibelius smelled the ‘scent of the first snow’ in his 6th Symphony, while evocative landscape turns to elemental seascape in the Interludes Britten extracted from his opera Peter Grimes premiered in June 1945. Scarcely a month later the world would change forever with the detonation of the first nuclear bomb, subject of a more recent operatic head-turner: John Adams’ audacious ‘Dr Atomic.’ To conduct the ‘symphony of the opera’ the New York Times called “the musical event of the year”, none other than Adams himself - in his element in more senses than one. Ever heard classical music DJ's, other than on the radio? Well that's what the New Parnassus Club will bring you. They've been taking classical music into some unusual venues in Bristol over the last year or so. Now we've invited them to play with the big boys and they don't come much bigger than John Adams and the LSO. After the concert in the main hall, the New Parnassus Club will entertain you for an hour or so in the foyer area. Expect to hear the finest 20th century classical music, matched with some live performance, in an experience designed to complement the work of John Adams. Grab a drink, tell us what you want to hear. if we have it we will play it. Never thought that you'd be able to sidle up to a DJ and say "excuse me mate, you got any Bartok?" did you. | Royal College of Music, Amaryllis Fleming Concert Hall, London SW7 2BS, United Kingdom Friday 12-Mar-10 19:30 Purcell’s Dioclesian This March, we’re pleased to be offering a rare chance to see the work that made the operatic career of Henry Purcell. While his earlier work Dido and Aeneas was a flop, Purcell’s semi-opera The Prophetess, or the History of Dioclesian was a great success, and led to commissions for King Arthur and then The Fairy Queen. The “sumptuous and varied” music (The New Grove Dictionary of Opera) offers a stream of instrumental and vocal highlights as we are led through the life of the emperor Dioclesian. This concert performance will include baroque dance sequences. This performance is dedicated to the memory of Douglas Craig who died last year at the age of 93. Douglas was Director of Opera at the Royal College of Music between 1977 and 1980, and enjoyed a distinguished career as singer, producer and director with many great British opera institutions including Opera for All, Sadler’s Wells, Glyndebourne, London Opera Centre and WNO.
