Lark Ascending Who says British music is all about Pomp and Circumstance? And who says Scandinavian composers only do gloom and doom?
Prepare to have a few preconceptions challenged as Vasily Petrenko and the RLPO soar high above the Cotswold countryside in Vaughan Wiliams’ ravishing The Lark Ascending – recently voted Britain’s favourite piece of classical music.
The masterly French virtuoso Jean-Yves Thibaudet plays Grieg’s delightful Piano Concerto. Expect wit as well as romance, and play spot-the-folksong in the uproariously brassy Suite that Michael Tippett wrote to celebrate the birth of Prince Charles.
Elgar’s ever-fresh musical portrait of his Worcestershire friends – well, the piece that gave the world Nimrod hardly needs any introduction. Tune after tune after tune...

Eggner Trio On their first visit to Lakeside the Eggner brothers captivated the audience with their musical energy and artistry. This concert programme further explores a wide emotional range. Beethoven’s Piano Trio Op.70 No.1 earned its nickname from the eerie second movement.
Shostakovich’s first piano trio written at the age of 17 was dedicated to Tanya Glivenko with whom Shostakovich was in love. There is a romantic intensity to the work but it nonetheless introduces elements of the grotesque which were to become more prominent in his compositional maturity.
Ravel’s Piano Trio was completed just as war broke out in 1914. The colouristic work draws inspiration from Malay verse forms and Basque folk music written within a highly complex musical structure.
The concert finishes at approximately 9.05pm

Corinthian Chamber Orchestra The Corinthian Chamber Orchestra performs the core of Bernstein’s last concert, given at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony on August 19, 1990 - Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes. This was not planned as Bernstein’s final concert, but by that point he must have known that it would be - he died two months later of advanced lung disease. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony also has particular significance for the CCO, having recorded it with their late Musical Director, Alan Hazeldine, who at the time was fighting a losing battle with lung cancer.
Bernstein generously championed many composers, including Samuel Barber. He didn’t premiere the Violin Concerto, but famously recorded it in 1965 with Isaac Stern and the New York Philharmonic. The CCO are joined by Laura Samuel of the celebrated Belcea Quartet to perform this melodious concerto.

Beethoven's Eroica Symphony Russian conductor Vladimir Jurowski returns for a second week on The Philadelphia Orchestra's 2009-10 season. He is joined by Benedetto Lupo, bronze medalist at the 1989 Van Cliburn Competition, who makes his Philadelphia Orchestra debut in the concerto Schumann composed for his wife, Clara, in the 1840s. The year 2010 marks the birth-bicentennial of Robert Schumann, whose powerful Romantic stamp on music has been felt ever since his untimely death in 1856. Maestro Jurowski maintains the tone of high drama with the Tragic Overture of Brahms-a composer the Schumanns discovered and promoted-and Beethoven's ruggedly defiant "Eroica" Symphony.

Bernard Haitink conducts Shostakovich 15 The orchestra has a good relationship with Shostakovich’s last symphony. Kirill Kondrashin conducted the Dutch premiere in 1972, less than a year after it was premiered in Moscow. Although Shostakovich was still viewed with suspicion in the Netherlands, the Concertgebouw’s chief conductor at the time Bernard Haitink conducted the work in 1976. It continues to be a matter of conjecture whether the many quotations in Shostakovich’s music are meant to convey a critical view of Soviet culture or a description of the composer’s own place in music history. Listeners might also wonder if they’re actually hearing the final seconds of his life ticking away at the end of the work.
