| Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Verizon Hall, Philadelphia PA 19102, United States Thursday 15-Apr-10 20:00 Ax plays Beethoven Poor Petrushka: He's just a pitiful klutz who doesn't have a chance with the Ballerina, who is more taken with the Moor's earthy masculinity. Stravinsky's still-startling score from 1911 blew the dust off the Punch and Judy tradition once and for all, creating a tragicomic masterpiece of staggering inventiveness. Opening the program is Ravel's tender Mother Goose Suite composed in 1910, originally for piano duet, with pieces inspired by the famous children's stories. American pianist Emanuel Ax joins Maestro Dutoit and the Orchestra for Beethoven's B-flat-major Concerto, the perfect amalgam of Classical charm and Beethovenian bite. | Concertgebouw, Large Hall, Amsterdam, Netherlands Friday 14-May-10 20:15 Myung-Whung Chung conducts the "Pathétique" Both Tchaikovsky and Ravel found it difficult to be open about the subjective aspect of their work. Tchaikovsky did suggest a programme for his last symphony, popularly known as the ‘Pathétique’, calling it ‘the most sincere work I have ever written’. Yet he was anything but a melodramatic Russian. Although Ravel remained inscrutable his entire life, his music rises above the typical sangfroid that typifies so much French art. They meet each other somewhere in the middle, in their references to the Viennese waltz. The discerning Korean conductor Chung is sure to manage both very well indeed. | Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Wednesday 16-Feb-11 19:30 Ravel and Berlioz As a performance of Shakespeare’s Hamlet unfurled before a Paris audience in 1827, one theatregoer got more than he bargained for. He not only ‘glimpsed the whole heaven of art’ on hearing Shakespeare’s text, but also fell madly in love with Harriet Smithson, the young Irish actress playing Ophelia. That audience member was a young composer, Hector Berlioz. Artistic possibility, passionate love and unerring striving fused in him. He became the great Romantic he’s known as today, and set about thrusting all his feelings into a yearning, heartfelt symphony, the Symphonie fantastique. Berlioz’s untouchable, captivating musical language was born. London Philharmonic Orchestra Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Conductor Anna Caterina Antonacci, Soprano | ||
