| Cadogan Hall, London, London SW1X 9DQ, United Kingdom Tuesday 5-Oct-10 07:30pm A Tchaikovsky Celebration Even though Tchaikovsky's musical output consisted of many romantic and memorable orchestral works, his equally well-crafted opera scores are often less well-remembered. The Polonaise from his opera Eugene Onegin is a fine example of his gift for this genre and is a perfect opener to this concert. His Violin Concerto was dismissed and regarded as unplayable and awkward; the Concerto's dedicatee even refused to perform the work. Tchaikovsky thankfully stuck to his laurels and this Concerto has become a firm favourite for the concert platform. Though Tchaikovsky was experencing great emotional pain while writing his 'Pathetique' Symphony, it arguably still remains his dramatic and most inspired work. Tickets £10-£35. | ||

| Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Verizon Hall, Philadelphia, PA, Philadelphia, PA 19102, United States Thursday 18-Nov-10 08:00pm Philadelphia Orchestra Spanish-born conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos joins forces with Greek-born violin virtuoso Leonidas Kavakos for one of the most revered concertos in the repertoire. Kavakos, who recently toured Europe with The Philadelphia Orchestra and former Music Director Christoph Eschenbach, has been dubbed "The Violinist of Violinists" by the Strad. Frühbeck, artistic director of the Dresden Philharmonic, has been a favorite locally since his sensational American debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1969. He sets the Tchaikovsky Concerto against the Overture to Mikhail Glinka's bubbling nationalistic opera Ruslan and Lyudmila and Bartók's virtuosic Concerto for Orchestra from 1945, a piece whose assertive brilliance and orchestral mastery reveal little of the composer's tragic poverty and illness during the last months of his life. | ||

| De Montfort Hall, Leicester, Leicester LE1 7RU, United Kingdom Saturday 11-Dec-10 07:30pm Lazarev conducts at De Montfort Hall A festive programme brings the Philharmonia to the Christmas season, with the sleigh ride in Prokofoiev's 'Lieutenant Kijé' setting the scene for a programme of wintry cheer. Tchaikovsky's soaring Violin Concerto provides a moment of respite in the middle of the hustle and bustle before his seasonal ballet music to 'The Nutcracker' completes the programme. Telling an enchanting story of a little girl whose Christmas gifts come to life, this is a firm favourite of young and old alike. | ||

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Tuesday 21-Dec-10 08:00pm Russian National Orchestra The first private orchestra to be founded in post-Soviet Russia, the Russian National Orchestra was launched under the direction of Mikhail Pletnev. The great Russian pianist has concentrated increasingly on conducting, placing his talents at the service of the great symphonic repertoire and of Russian works in particular. This will be an all-Slav programme, ranging from Bohemia to Russia; the orchestra is joined by the soloist Gidon Kremer, one of the most exciting violinists of his generation. We can be sure that there will be nothing commonplace about Kremer's interpretation of Tchaikovsky's well-known Concerto. | ||

| Anvil, Basingstoke, Basingstoke RG21 7QR, United Kingdom Wednesday 2-Mar-11 07:45pm Philharmonia Orchestra Glinka's fizzing, exuberant overture to his opera captures the essence of Pushkin's magical poem, rooted deeply in Russian folklore. Tchaikovsky's concerto begins in heroic vein, and continues with a tender slow movement. The spectacular finale takes the form of a whirling Russian dance. Sibelius' fifth and most well-known symphony grows from the seed of its tiny opening figure to the most outwardly heroic of his seven works in the form. The final majestic brass theme was inspired by a flight of sixteen migrating swans the awe-struck composer saw wheeling over his house in the countryside. The Philharmonia Orchestra is Anvil Arts' Orchestra is Partnership. | ||
