| Kimmel Center for Performing Arts, Verizon Hall, Philadelphia PA 19102, United States Friday 9-Apr-10 14:00 The Rite of Spring Maestro Dutoit continues The Philadelphia Orchestra's focus on works written for the Ballets Russes with Stravinsky's epochal The Rite of Spring, which caused a riot at its 1913 premiere and continues to rattle even today. Also on the program is La Mer, Debussy's 1905 masterpiece of subtlety and color depicting aspects of the sea. Polish pianist Piotr Anderszewski, winner of the prestigious 2002 Gilmore Award, joins Maestro Dutoit for the Symphony No. 4 by 20th-century Polish master Karol Szymanowski. This curious 1932 work is as much concerto as symphony, with a demanding solo part originally performed by the composer himself. This program will also be heard in Carnegie Hall as part of its Szymanowski Project. Szymanowski, Karol (1882-1937), Symphony no.4, ''Symphonie Concertante'', for piano and orchestra, Op.60 Philadelphia Orchestra Charles Dutoit, Conductor Piotr Anderszewski, Piano | ||

| Chicago Symphony Center, Chicago IL 60604, United States Friday 7-May-10 13:30 Debussy La Mer - Beyond the Score Debussy’s greatest orchestral masterpiece, La mer was completed in 1905, halfway between our two works by Mahler and Rachmaninov. In this vivid music, the French composer achieves one of the most perfect balances in all symphonic music between architectural mathematics and the shimmering use of symbolism and suggestion, deeply immersing the listener in a world of dreams and the unconscious. For Debussy, as for Rachmaninov, the sea and water are not merely the actual oceans of our planet, but the fluid inner world of spirit and imagination, across which every human being voyages.
