| Concertgebouw, Large Hall, Amsterdam, Netherlands Wednesday 28-Apr-10 20:15 Schubert and Beethoven with Fray and Masur Musical mythology would have it that Schubert’s last complete symphony would come to be known as the ‘Ninth’, nicknamed the ‘Great’. Schumann discovered the work in Schubert’s personal effects and saw in it a magnificent swansong. Mahler would later study and revise the work, which he also felt the need to do for Schumann’s symphonies. But now we know better. The symphony was written during a relatively happy time in Schubert’s life and stylistically is not that far removed from the ‘classical’ symphonies of Mozart and Haydn. But it is indeed ‘great’. | Philharmonic Hall, Liverpool, United Kingdom Thursday 13-May-10 19:30 The ‘Great’ Symphony Musicians call Schubert’s Ninth Symphony ‘the Great’ – and they’re not just talking about its grand scale and cheerful disposition. No composer has ever been so generous with his inspiration; Schubert’s tunes just pour out, swept along with an irresistible swing. It’s one of the happiest musical journeys you’ll ever take, and there’s no more inspirational guide than veteran Austrian conductor Leopold Hager. He’s got this music in his blood, and so has the distinguished Austrian pianist Stefan Vladar, the youngest ever winner of the International Beethoven Competition, Vienna. Expect insights to abound as, together, they explore Beethoven’s darkest and most personal piano concerto, the perfect foil to Schubert’s magnificent symphony.
