| Hilbert Circle Theatre, 45 Monument Circle, Indianapolis 46204, United States Friday 16-Apr-10 19:30 Dvorak's "New World" Symphony At the premiere of the "New World" Symphony the New York Evening Post declared, "a masterwork has been added to the symphonic literature;" over a century later, it remains one of the most popular works in the repertoire. While it was inspired by the music of America, including the spirituals of African Americans and Native Americans, the symphony is full of Czech references and is as much Dvorak's homesick tribute to his native land as it is a tribute to America. Polish conductor Krysztof Urbanski makes his US debut and Dejan Lazic returns for Mozart's A Major Piano Concerto. The Dvorák American Heritage Association maintains a website dedicated to Dvorák's residency in America. Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Krzysztof Urbanski, Conductor Dejan Lazic, Piano | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Wednesday 6-Oct-10 19:30 Suk, Chopin and Dvořák So much great music is born of longing to be somewhere else. With the easy elegance and pruned sophistication of his Second Piano Concerto, Chopin hoped to endear himself to the opinion-forming concertgoers of Paris, 850 miles from his home in Warsaw. Antonín Dvořák had already hit the big-time when he wrote his New World Symphony. But parachuted into America to run New York’s fledgling music college, the composer felt himself longing for home: the Symphony’s spirituals and plantation songs – its shapely and contented melodies – are tinged with a slight Slavic sadness. | Benjamin and Marian Schuster Performing Arts Center: Mead Theatre, 1 West 2nd St, Dayton 45402, United States Thursday 24-Mar-11 20:00 New Worlds Enesco’s wild rhapsody sets this program in motion. Then, you’re off to discover two visions of the same country; the America that Dvorák came to visit in 1892, and the America of today. Premiered out of town in 2009 under Neal’s baton, Michael Daugherty’s exciting electric guitar concerto now comes to our stage. Inspired by the quilting community of Gee’s Bend, Alabama, this music takes you from rock to blues to classical and back again. Gee’s Bend is the subject of the March 25th Classical Connections (page 9). The same American spirit, albeit with a Bohemian accent, is evident in Dvorák’s not-to-be-missed New World Symphony No. 9. Dayton Philharmonic Neal Gittleman, Conductor D. J. Sparr, Guitar | ||
