| Royal Albert Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Tuesday 7-Sep-10 07:30pm Prom 71 In its first visit to the UK since Daniele Gatti became Music Director, the Orchestre National de France presents three great works linked to France and its capital city. Dating from a decade before his symphony of seascapes, La mer, Debussy’s poetic Prélude made its composer’s name when it was premiered in 1894, and created controversy when Nijinsky danced his erotic choreography of it for the Ballets Russes in 1912. A year later the Paris premiere of Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring prompted an even more sensational succès de scandale for Diaghilev’s company, causing the most famous riot in musical history. | ||

| De Munt | La Monnaie: Fiocco Hall, Brussels, Rue Leopoldstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Wednesday 8-Sep-10 12:30pm VIVE LA MÉLODIE FRANÇAISE ! With dissonant chords, romantic love songs and capricious melodies, this trio will immerse you in what could be called the French counterpart to Mahlers German Romanticism. Berlioz was the first of his contemporaries to start making waves - high time for Romanticism! This is exactly why this programme will open with Berlioz’ Nuits d’Eté, moving on to works by Godard, Widor, Fauré and Saint-Saëns to complete a sketch of French Romanticism. The programme will close with Prélude à L’Après d’un Faune, Debussy’s contribution to the ushering-in of a new musical era. This aptly-chosen overview will be performed by Alexis Kossenko, Rémy Cardinale and baritone Alain Buet. Berlioz, Hector (1803-1869), Les Nuits d'Eté, Op.7 (Extracts) | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Thursday 11-Nov-10 07:30pm Philharmonia Orchestra Dedicated to Tchaikovsky’s friend and close confidant Madame von Meck, the composer wrote in a letter to her that she would find in the Fourth Symphony “an echo of your most intimate thoughts and emotions”. The opening fanfare motif represented to Tchaikovsky ‘Fate’ preventing him from attaining happiness: a comment made all the more poignant when we realise he composed the work in the aftermath of his catastrophic marriage. Yet the finale is an exciting charge towards the finish line, its enthusiasm and boundless energy outweighing the work’s earlier bleakness. | ||

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Saturday 12-Mar-11 08:00pm Brussels Choral Society Pierre Boulez once remarked that he saw the Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune as "the awakening of modern music". First and foremost, however, this is wonderful, dreamy music, in which Debussy created a distinctive sound world of his own. Around 1900 his contemporary Ralph Vaughan Williams composed an ode to the sea. A Sea Symphony was originally intended as a cantata, but grew into a symphony for choir and orchestra. The young musicians of the Ensemble Orchestral de Bruxelles are joined by two choirs: the Brussels Choral Society and the Philharmonischer Chor Köln. | ||

British keyboard sensation Imogen Cooper performs Mozart's "Jenamy" Concerto, penned by the 21-year-old composer for his French friend Victoire Jenamy and seen by many as a watershed in Mozart's output. Dutilleux's Métaboles is a sort of miniature concerto for orchestra, with each of its "movements" dominated by a different orchestral section. Roussel's Third Symphony is juxtaposed with Debussy's elusive Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun, cited by some as the piece from which all modern music emanated. | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Thursday 3-Nov-11 07:30pm Philharmonia Orchestra The extraordinary Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Bartók’s only opera, is widely regarded as his masterpiece. Its world is sinister, dark and deeply disturbing. There are just two voices throughout, Duke Bluebeard and his new wife, Judith; the entire one-act opera takes place in the hall of Bluebeard’s castle. Judith opens the hall’s seven doors, one by one; each door reveals its own horror. In one, a torture chamber; in another, an armoury filled with bloody weapons; and in another, a garden where blood stains the plants’ leaves. The final door opens and reveals Bluebeard’s three former wives, who step forward and receive Judith into their eternally imprisoned group. This is chilling, psychological drama, one of the great achievements of 20th century music. In this evening’s concert it is paired with his final, unfinished work, the vigorous Third Piano Concerto. | ||
