| Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Friday 1-Oct-10 07:30pm London Philharmonic Orchestra As the 20th century loomed, Paris seized control of Western music's future. Even the conservative Saint-Saens began to suggest teh exotic in his highly stylised piano concertos, while also quoting a serene melody by his elegant pupil Faure in the Second. But no Parisian was quite prepared for Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring, which unleased a total reappraisal of both dance and music, replacing foot-led ballet with pelvic-born ritual dance and favouring the pounding, jagged rhythms of the earth over traditional principles of harmony. | ||

The word “Amen” is common to all three monotheistic religions, Christianity, Judaism and Islam, and its meanings reach out towards the fundamental issues of humanity: life and the experience of it, death and its meaning. | ||

| Birmingham Town Hall, Birmingham B3 3DQ, United Kingdom Sunday 21-Nov-10 07:30pm Beethoven's Eighth Symphony Two piano concertos by composers who conducted their own music at Town Hall – Mendelssohn’s intensely dramatic First Concerto and Saint-Saëns’s sparkling Second. The legend of a falling chandelier that left the audience unharmed at the premiere of Haydn’s Symphony No 96 earned it the nickname ‘Miracle’ – a title that might also be used to describe the good-humoured genius of Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony. Classic FM’s Anne-Marie Minhall, says of tonight’s recommended concert: “Howard Shelley is something of a firm favourite with Classic FM listeners whether he’s playing the piano or conducting. Tonight he’ll be wearing both hats on the concert platform.” 6.15pm Pre-concert talk. | ||

| De Munt | La Monnaie: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Saturday 12-Feb-11 08:00pm Stèphane Degout: "Colloque Sentimental" A century after their legendary quest for ‘true’ Hungarian folk music, Zoltán Kodály and Bela Bartók continue to appeal to the imagination, less for the ethnic aspect of their work than for its intrinsic quality. Kodály’s arrangements of folk songs include many real gems. Bartók’s Hungarian Folk Songs is a collection of alternating long melancholy stories and short humorous sketches. The young Györgi Ligeti composed several songs in which he masterfully combined tradition with a more experimental sound. The most western composer in this recital is Franz Liszt, whose settings of poetry by Goethe, Heine and Schiller contributed a number of superb pieces to the romantic lieder repertoire. Soprano Andrea Rost had previously won over the audience as a moving Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro and is now returning to La Monnaie for this recital of Hungarian songs. / Production La Monnaie Works by Debussy, Claude (1862-1918) (Songs on poems by Paul Verlaine) Works by Hahn, Reynaldo (1875-1947) (Songs by) Works by Saint-Saëns, Camille (1835-1921) (Songs By) Works by Schubert, Franz (1797-1828) (Songs by) Works by Strauss, Richard (1864-1949) (Songs by) Works by Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897) (Songs by) | ||
