| Royal Albert Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Friday 22-Oct-10 07:30pm The Great Classics: Rossini, Rachmaninov, Rimsky-Korsakov A rousing Rossini opening is followed by two great classics of the Russian repertoire, with the legendary John Lill taking to the piano in the most celebrated of Rachmaninov’s four keyboard concertos. The work is supremely confident and exudes a lush romanticism that subsequently counterpointed the railway station romance of the 1945 tear-jerker Brief Encounter. Rimsky-Korsakov displays his orchestral wizardry in the ever-popular Scheherazade. Based upon episodes from The Arabian Nights, this thrilling music conjures up the drama, passion and adventure of those timeless tales, and is still regarded as one of the world’s greatest orchestral showpieces. | Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Saturday 23-Oct-10 07:00pm Rossini - in concert Concert performance given in association with Opera Rara. Sung in Italian with English surtitles. This performance will last approximately 2 hours 45 minutes including interval. In his day, Gioacchino Rossini was simply a superstar: a crowd-pleaser and a cultural pivot. In the opera house he formed the bridge from Classicism to Romanticism; in wider society he linked revolution against monarchy to liberalism and autocracy. Aureliano in Palmira is both unique and fascinating: a moment of distinct elegance and poise in the career of an out-and-out entertainer. From his stirring, heroic subject matter Rossini creates a lightly-scored, charming and sensitive piece; male heroism is meted out in one instance by a noble horn obbligato; female defiance by consistently attractive but controlled coloratura. When the voices of Arsace and Zenobia combine, they do so to form, for the 19th-century French commentator Henri Beyle, the ‘finest duet Rossini has ever written.’ London Philharmonic Orchestra Maurizio Benini, Conductor Annick Massis, Soprano: Zenobia Silvia Tro Santafé, Soprano: Arsace Kenneth Tarver, Tenor: Aureliano Andrew Foster-Williams, Bass: Gran Sacerdote Ezgi Kutlu, Mezzo-soprano: Publia Geoffrey Mitchell Choir | ||

| St George's, Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom Saturday 30-Oct-10 07:30pm Rossini's Petite Messe Solennelle Considered by some to be Rossini’s most finely-crafted work, the Petite Messe Solennelle is neither petite, nor particularly solemn! Although a serious religious work honestly and deeply felt, it is unmistakeably operatic in style, with the most delightful touches (as would be expected from this most celebrated of opera buffa composers), a vital musical work that ranges from hushed intensity to boisterous high spirits, and abounds in memorable tunes. The Cardiff Polyphonic Choir is one of Wales’ leading choirs, and since its inception has performed in all the major London musical venues, worked with many of the great orchestras, and sung under the batons of Sir Colin Davis, Sir Charles Groves, Richard Hickox, Sir Roger Norrington, and Sir John Eliot Gardiner.
