| Oakham School Chapel, Rutland, Oakham LE15 6DT, United Kingdom Friday 15-Oct-10 07:45pm Ensemble 360 (A Music in the Round concert) Eleven internationally renowned musicians make up Ensemble 360 so the possibilities for different instrumental combinations are many and various! They’re also loved particularly for their ability to communicate their passion and enthusiasm for the music to their audience. Tonight they’ll play Poulenc’s animated and witty Sextet, which they’ve recently recorded. Mendelssohn’s Sextet in D is in contrast rich and deep, a feeling intensified by the low register instruments, whilst Brahms’ Trio, written in the wake of his mother’s death, is full of angst and pain. Usually heard for orchestra, Brahms’ Hungarian Dances are based on gypsy tunes and full of explosive energy. “...we weren’t listening to music being player; we were listening to music being lived.” Audience member. Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897), Trio in E flat major for Horn (or Cello or Viola), Violin and Piano, Op.40 Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897), Hungarian Dances (excerpts, arr Nicholas Charron) Price type: Low cost: 50% at £10 or less | ||

Leading up to Poulenc's celebrated Sextet are effervescent quintets by the iconic masters Francaix and Ibert, a delicate sonata by rarely-heard composer Maurice Emmanuel, and a contemporary work by Yan Maresz that carries the tradition of French sound into the 21st century. | ||

'dazzlingly performed...Claire Booth giving a marathon display of transcendent vocal beauty' Independent
Claire Booth, ‘one of the finest and most versatile vocalists of her generation' (Guardian) creates an astonishing portrait of women on the edge in Berio's startling Sequenza No. III, and Poulenc's astonishing setting of Jean Cocteau's monologue for a woman on the telephone. Through a one-sided conversation La Voix Humaine (1959) reveals a woman's desperate attempts to survive the breakup of an affair as she argues, cajoles and pleads with her lover. In Sequenza III, (1962) Berio exploits every aspect of the female voice and expression, pushing the performer to virtuoso feats and creating an extraordinary and unique portrait. Transition present these works with innovative interactive film, and projected translations.

| De Munt | La Monnaie: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Saturday 12-Feb-11 08:00pm Stèphane Degout: "Colloque Sentimental" A century after their legendary quest for ‘true’ Hungarian folk music, Zoltán Kodály and Bela Bartók continue to appeal to the imagination, less for the ethnic aspect of their work than for its intrinsic quality. Kodály’s arrangements of folk songs include many real gems. Bartók’s Hungarian Folk Songs is a collection of alternating long melancholy stories and short humorous sketches. The young Györgi Ligeti composed several songs in which he masterfully combined tradition with a more experimental sound. The most western composer in this recital is Franz Liszt, whose settings of poetry by Goethe, Heine and Schiller contributed a number of superb pieces to the romantic lieder repertoire. Soprano Andrea Rost had previously won over the audience as a moving Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro and is now returning to La Monnaie for this recital of Hungarian songs. / Production La Monnaie Works by Debussy, Claude (1862-1918) (Songs on poems by Paul Verlaine) Works by Hahn, Reynaldo (1875-1947) (Songs by) Works by Saint-Saëns, Camille (1835-1921) (Songs By) Works by Schubert, Franz (1797-1828) (Songs by) Works by Strauss, Richard (1864-1949) (Songs by) Works by Brahms, Johannes (1833-1897) (Songs by) | ||
