| Queen Elizabeth Hall, London, United Kingdom Thursday 18-Mar-10 19:30 Corinthian Chamber Orchestra The Corinthian Chamber Orchestra performs the core of Bernstein’s last concert, given at Tanglewood with the Boston Symphony on August 19, 1990 - Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony and Britten’s Four Sea Interludes. This was not planned as Bernstein’s final concert, but by that point he must have known that it would be - he died two months later of advanced lung disease. Beethoven’s Seventh Symphony also has particular significance for the CCO, having recorded it with their late Musical Director, Alan Hazeldine, who at the time was fighting a losing battle with lung cancer. Bernstein generously championed many composers, including Samuel Barber. He didn’t premiere the Violin Concerto, but famously recorded it in 1965 with Isaac Stern and the New York Philharmonic. The CCO are joined by Laura Samuel of the celebrated Belcea Quartet to perform this melodious concerto. Corinthian Chamber Orchestra Peter Stark, Conductor Laura Samuel, Violin | ||

| Wigmore Hall, London, United Kingdom Friday 9-Apr-10 19:30 Ailish Tynan soprano; Iain Burnside piano For the best part of a century, Ireland in all its Romantic glory exerted an irresistible spell on generations of British composers. While some, like Bax and Moeran, adopted an Irish identity, others barely set foot on the Emerald Isle. For American composers, too, the idea of Ireland was enough to kindle a creative spark. This ingenious programme threads together poetry and music, street songs and high art: the richness and the contradictions that make up Ireland’s musical legacy. | Sutton House, Homerton High Street, London, United Kingdom Sunday 16-May-10 19:00 Sutton House Music Society: Fitzwilliam String Quartet The Fitzwilliam Quartet. Founded in 1968 by four Cambridge undergraduates, the Fitzwilliam first became well known through its close personal association with Dmitri Shostakovich, who befriended them following a visit to York to hear them play. He entrusted them with the Western premieres of his last three quartets, and before long they had become the first-ever group to perform and record all fifteen. These recordings, which gained many international awards, secured for them a world-wide concert schedule, and a long-term contract with Decca/London which embraced some byways of late Romantic repertoire (including Franck, Delius, Borodin and Sibelius) and a Beethoven cycle. Indeed, in 2005 the Shostakovich set was included in Gramophone magazine’s “Hundred Greatest-ever Recordings”. Generous private patronage has made possible their current collaboration with Linn Records which includes CDs of Haydn’s Seven Last Words, the Brahms Clarinet Quintet (with Lesley Schatzberger), and 20th century English Songs with James Gilchrist and Anna Tilbrook (their Vaughan Williams’ On Wenlock Edge was a finalist for last year’s Gramophone Awards). The Bruckner Quintet will be released in December, and future plans include Purcell string music and the complete quartets of Tchaikovsky. They have been Quartet-in-Residence at many universities includingYork, Warwick, Fitzwilliam College Cambridge, as well as Affiliate Artists at Bucknell University U.S.A.. Tickets and info from the Sutton House Music Society. Pimms’ and ‘Punch’ will be available in the Elizabethan courtyard. Fitzwilliam String Quartet | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, United Kingdom Thursday 20-May-10 19:30 Philharmonia Orchestra conduted by Kirill Karabits Prokofiev's score for his ballet of Romeo and Juliet was originally deemed undanceable by the authority of the Bolshoi Theatre, who commissioned the ballet. Despite Prokofiev's revisions the company still initially rejected the work, which was eventually premiered in 1938 and later taken up by the Kirov Ballet. Just a year later, Samuel Barber completed his Violin Concerto, a work of enormous power and beauty. The final movement, an extremely fast 'moto perpetuo', was also rejected by its original intended performer as unplayable: it sees the woodwind and brass pursue the frenetic solo violin all the way to the finish line. | St George's, Bristol, Bristol, United Kingdom Friday 28-May-10 19:30 Shostakovich Series: Raphael Wallfisch, cello & John York, piano Powerful individual players both, Raphael Wallfisch and John York are also one of Britain's most talented cello and piano duos, performing with beauty, passion and control. Expect an electrifying rapport as they bring St George’s Shostakovich Series to an immaculate close. In this 100th anniversary year of his birth, Samuel Barber’s questing and passionate Cello Sonata receives a much deserved airing and, given the close friendship between the composers, it seems only fitting that it should be heard alongside Shostakovich’s own Cello Sonata, a work of mournful lyricism with hints of mordant wit. The series ends with a cello performance of Shostakovich’s Viola Sonata, the composer’s last musical testament, pregnant with intimations of death. Wallfisch and York are perfectly attuned not only to the music's deep melancholy, but also to its sense of repose, the distorted folk tunes and impassioned monologues intensely sustained, the sparse piano lines vividly sure. Even Dmitri might smile... Raphael Wallfisch, Cello John York, Piano | ||

| Wigmore Hall, London, United Kingdom Sunday 6-Jun-10 19:30 Steven Isserlis cello; Dénes Várjon piano A varied programme of sonatas by four composers for whom important anniversaries fall in 2010. Samuel Barber (b. 1910) and Ernö von Dohnányi (d. 1960) wrote their only cello sonatas at the beginnings of their careers; both works are full of youthful energy, passion and originality. In contrast, the sonatas of Schumann and Chopin (both b. 1810) were written towards the end of the composers’ respective lives; both men were already far advanced along stylistic roads that had taken them into hitherto unexplored worlds. Curiously, neither of these two late sonatas have achieved the popularity of the composers’ earlier pieces, but both Dénes and I believe passionately in the genius of both works, and are happy to celebrate the bi-centenary with these two comparatively little-known masterpieces.
