Philip Venables's K is a tribute and prelude to Mozart's Clarinet Quintet, which follows in this programme. It takes the first two bars of the Quintet and, in the composer's words, ‘pulls them apart, exposing, reworking, fragmenting, reflecting and elaborating their harmony and gesture'. The fragment on which the piece is based is heard towards the end. Mozart fell in love with the voice-like sound of the clarinet relatively late in life. Clarinet virtuoso Anton Stadler was the catalyst for this passion and inspired both the Clarinet Concerto and this Clarinet Quintet. The first of the Quintet's four movements sets the mood with its charming, conversational exchange between the clarinet and string quartet. The second movement is strikingly similar to the slow movement of the concerto, with the clarinet's lyrical qualities to the fore. A delightful minuet with two trios follows before the theme and variations of the final movement in which Mozart experiments further with all the possible combinations of instruments in a finale of striking inventiveness. Mary Eade studied the violin with Yehudi Menuhin and Frederick Grinke at the Yehudi Menuhin School, during which time she participated in master classes by Nadia Boulanger, Kodaly and Ravi Shankar. Student life took her to Freiburg in Germany where she studied with Wolfgang Marschner, later returning to London and the Royal College of Music. She gave her Wigmore Hall debut in 1975 and has played many concertos notably with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the English Chamber Orchestra, London Festival Orchestra, Tallis Chamber Orchestra and the Ten Tors Orchestra. Since moving to Devon Mary has become the Director of the Taunton Sinfonietta, formed the Eade String Quartet, is co-leader of the Ten Tors Orchestra and leads for the Plymouth Philharmonic Choir. Her association with Divertimento has involved her in many concerts ranging from Piano Trios to Octets to Chamber Orchestral concerts. A rare opportunity to hear both Mozart’s piano quartets in one evening. Like non-identical twins, one mellow, the other passionate and dramatic, these mature works were the first masterpieces of the piano quartet repertoire. Howard Shelley, himself a master in Mozart, joins our strings in a program which also includes Judith Weir’s haunting Bagpiper’s String Trio. Composed in 1985 it tells the tale of a bagpiper in Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army, who was captured by the English and executed because his bagpipes were mistaken for a weapon.
