St John Passion The Collegium Musicum was an important part of Bach's musical life during his time in Leipzig, but his main employment was that of Cantor to the city's four churches. Bach's cantatas from this period are abundant and sublime but it is perhaps his musical depictions of the Passion of Christ which show the greatest depth and intensity. The St John Passion was performed several times during Bach's time in Leipzig and he continued to revise the work right up to the end of his life. I Fagiolini's perfiormances of pre-classical vocal masterpieces have been rightly praised throughout the world. They are accompanied by Baroque specialists the Feinstein Ensemble.

Royal Academy of Music, Duke's Hall, London NW1 5HT, United Kingdom Sunday 21-Mar-10 12:00
Royal Academy of Music/Kohn Foundation Bach Cantata Series ‘Selig ist der Mann’ was first heard on St Stephen’s Day (Boxing Day), 1725. The librettist uses the martyrdom of St Stephen to illustrate, metaphorically, the salvation of the Christian believer through death. Bach casts his piece in dialogue form and omits any chorus, preferring a sequence of four arias of which the last, for soprano, is a joyful prayer of thanksgiving.
‘Was Soll ich aus dir machen Ephraim’ was first performed in 1723 and is a sombre work, evoking the often turbulent relationship between the Lord and his chosen people in the Old Testament. A severe alto aria proclaims a merciless judgement on all sinners and only towards the end do the text and music speak of repentance and the redeeming blood of Christ.
‘Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid’ is another dialogue cantata in which the two protagonists are bass (the traditional vox Christi) and soprano (the Soul). The movements which frame the work are chorale fantasias in which the soprano sings the chorale (hymn) melody. The concluding one is exuberant, virtuosic and affirmative.
‘The perfect Sunday lunch for any Bach lover.’ The Times, January 2009
Book for several concerts in the Royal Academy of Music / Kohn Foundation Bach Cantatas series for discounts of up to 30%. See the Royal Academy of Music website for details.

"Variations on a theme: Bach Beethoven Schumann Balakirev Misha began studying piano at an early age in Nalchik (Russian Federation), and
his outstanding early promise blossomed into graduation with distinction from
the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music. He studied with Lina Bulatova, herself
a pupil of the revered professor Helen Gnessina and legendary H. Neuhaus, and
later became her assistant for two years.
In 1996 after a successful career in Russia, where he gave numerous recitals all
over the country, he decided to broaden his musical horizons and moved to the
West.
He attended several masterclasses given by L. Berman, K. H. Kämmerling,
B. Rhingeissen and followed post-graduate studies at the Hochschule für Musik
in Weimar and the Sweelinck Conservatorium, Amsterdam.
After winning major prizes at international piano competitions Misha was invited
to take part in important events such as ‘Chopin-Liszt’ Festival in Leipzig and
perform with first-class orchestras. Misha Fomin is now extensively in demand
throughout Europe and is frequently heard in TV and radio broadcasts.
Recordings he made have received critical acclaim in the leading classical piano
magazines.
Most recent appearances include The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and The
Musikverein in Wien.

David Simpson, Baroque cello David Simpson is principal cellist of the French Baroque ensemble Les Arts Florissants.
The vast majority of works for melody instruments from the Baroque era require a basso continuo accompaniment. Unaccompanied solos were very rare exceptions. Johann Sebastian Bach’s six Sonatas and Partitas for solo violin and his six Suites for solo cello are of course the most famous examples, but other composers both before and after Bach also wrote some very fine unaccompanied music. This program, centered on the First and Fourth Bach Cello Suites, provides an opportunity to hear some wonderful examples of how these composers were able to suggest harmony and counterpoint on a solo melody instrument. The program includes works by Christopher Simpson, Georg Philipp Telemann, Domenico Gabrielli, Carlo Graziani, and several of the beautiful, recently republished Capricci by Giuseppe dall’Abaco.

Manchester Mid-day Concert Described by some distinguished music critics as ‘thrilling and exciting’ and ‘electric,’ Christopher Orton is one of the leading recorder players of the younger generation. His repertoire is not confined to the Baroque period, but embraces a full range of styles. In 2007 he became the first recorder player to be awarded a BBC Performing Arts Trust Award. The £20,000 grant has enabled him to commission a number of new works for recorder, including the work by Edward Gregson which receives its premiere in Christopher Orton’s Bridgewater Hall debut recital.

RWCMD Badinerie Concert In this programme we juxtapose music by Bach with works that seem to have exerted a strong influence on him. Nowadays we tend to put Bach firmly in the spotlight but his musical style was influenced by many other composers whose works he acquired and studied voraciously. Today we glance at the broader context for his work.

Bach's St Matthew Passion This performance heralds a return to the Bach tradition, established in 1891 when Julius Röntgen conducted the St Matthew Passion in Amsterdam for the first time. From 1899, it became an annual event. More recently, Nikolaus Harnoncourt spiced things up by alternating St Matthew with St John and even by conducting MacMillan’s St John Passio last season. Now the ‘authentic’ St Matthew is back. This collaboration features the Canadian early music specialist Bernard Labadie, assisted by musicians including James Gilchrist and Florian Boesch, who were also guests in 2007.
