Heath Quartet Oliver Heath, Rebecca Eves, violins; Gary Pomeroy, viola; Christopher Murray, 'cello
This inspiring young quartet won all the major ensemble prizes whilst studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. They also won first prize and the Audience prize at the Tromp International Quartet Competition. They have performed concerts throughout the Netherlands and UK including the Concertgebouw and Wigmore Hall (broadcast on BBC Radio 3)
At the 2009 International Joseph Haydn Chamber Music Competition held in the Mozart Hall of the Wiener Konzerthaus, the Heath Quartet won the special prize for the best interpretation of a work by Haydn and another special prize for the best interpretation of a commissioned composition by Skweres.
Lest you need more convincing, here is what the Strad magazine said of this YCAT quartet: "The Heath Quartet displayed a rare musicality .... a keen interpretive insight combined with refined playing, this is one of the most interesting young quartets I have heard in recent years". Put it in your diary NOW!

This year, Ensemble 360 tours a programme of superb and unjustly neglected works. Prokofiev’s Quintet for strings and wind was commissioned as part of a circus themed ballet called Trapeze and as a result is a quirky, fun work. Martinu finished his Nonet for nine instruments just before his death. It looks back to some of his inspirations: the music of Haydn and tunes from his Czech homeland. Schumann’s Piano Quintet is widely thought to be one of his greatest works.

TRING CHAMBER MUSIC 'Dvorak and his Czech Mates" The brief and passionate opening to Janacek’s violin sonata is characteristic of the warmth and intensity of so much Czech music. Like other composers, he turned to the intimacy of chamber music to express deep, often secret, feelings. Dvorak wrote his miniatures and his Piano Quintet in the same year. The former are almost forgotten whereas the quintet occupies a lofty place in the chamber music repertoire with its glowing melodies, piquant rhythms and a lyrical quality which is so typical of the Czech chamber music tradition. Martinu’s unusual Sonata for Two Violins adds a crisp, neoclassical and jazzy flavour to a program which comes straight from the heart.

Beethoven, Martinů, Julian Anderson and Nielsen This is the first chance this season to hear a work by the Orchestra’s new Composer in Residence Julian Anderson. Also comes music that lives no less: there’s a tinge of magic to Martinů’s Second Violin Concerto, filled with endearing harmonic flicks and flounces as it forages restlessly through a jungle of orchestral effects. And what is it about Fifth Symphonies? Beethoven’s, Shostakovich’s, Sibelius’s – they appear invested with an extra profundity. They seem to reach out from their neighbours. Nielsen’s Fifth is no different. An epic struggle between darkness and light, minor and major, violence and humanity; the lone voice of the snare drum silenced eventually by a surging, searing orchestra.
London Philharmonic Orchestra Jukka-Pekka Saraste, Conductor Frank-Peter Zimmermann, Violin
