![]() | ||
| Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Saturday 25-Sep-10 07:30pm Haydn, D'Amico, Dufay and Bartók 1918, and Béla Bartók encountered the legend of a young girl, forced by three thugs to lure men from the street into their den. When she encounters a magical Mandarin, a wild pursuit ensues before she embraces him and he dies. The story drew from Bartók his most astonishing orchestral creation, a piece that thrusts life into the manic tumult of the chase as the orchestra screws itself towards breaking point before plunging into its final catastrophic chords. Matteo D’Amico’s view of the flight of civilisation from ancient Istanbul receives its world première at this concert – a piece for speaker, vocal ensemble and orchestra whose sudden journeying offers a provocative counterpoint to Bartók’s. All qualities that should be highlighted by the programme for this recital: Haydn and Prokofiev, two composers in whom he shone in the final, as well as Liszt and Musorgsky: four quite different worlds, as rich as they are varied. | ||

| The Royal Hospital Chelsea, State Apartments, London, London SW3 4SR, United Kingdom Wednesday 29-Sep-10 07:00pm The RHC Concerts The RHC Concerts 2010 season opens with three outstanding string quartets performed in The Council Chambers of The State Apartments of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, offering the opportunity to enjoy music in this unique and wonderful setting which is the home of the Chelsea Pensioners. One of Haydn’s finest quartets is followed by the most popular piece of chamber music written by Dvorak. Mendelssohn’s second string quartet, written when he was only 18 years old, is thought to be inspired by the works of Beethoven. The Badke Quartet, formed in 2002, is widely recognised as one of Britain’s finest young string quartets. Winners of the 1st prize and Audience Prize at the 5th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition in 2007, the Badke Quartet has received widespread acclaim for its energetic and vibrant performances. | ||

| Malvern Theatres: Forum Theatre, Malvern WR14 3HB, United Kingdom Thursday 30-Sep-10 07:30pm John McCabe, piano John McCabe CBE is a Vice President of Malvern Concert Club. We are most grateful to him for generously giving his services for tonight’s recital. John McCabe is one of those rare musicians who is both composer and pianist of equal international standing. His pioneering mid-70s recording of the complete Haydn piano sonatas (still available on CD) was a revelation, and tonight’s fascinating programme links his beloved Haydn with Ravel, and Ravel with his own work, Tunstall Chimes, a piece inspired by the peal at a Kent church. Tonight’s companion study, Snowfall in Winter, was, according to the composer’s Lithuanian Diary, inspired by the name of an ice cream pudding.... | ||

The playfully classicist Haydn’s Divertimento meets the Wind Quintet of the Brno composer and Janáček pupil Pavel Haas who died tragically; Milhaud’s “La cheminée du Roi René” will be juxtaposed with a work by contemporary Austrian composer Helmut Eder.
