| Royal Albert Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Saturday 4-Sep-10 07:30pm Prom 66 In the first half of their second Prom, Sir Simon Rattle and the Berlin Philharmonic pair late works by two of Germany’s greatest late-Romantics – ‘Richard the First’ and ‘Richard the Third’, as the conductor Hans von Bülow rather wickedly called them (quipping that, after Wagner, there could be no ‘Richard the Second’). After the interval come sensational sonic adventures by the three great musical pioneers of early-20th-century Vienna. Celebrated Finnish soprano Karita Mattila returns to the Proms as soloist in Strauss’s opulently nostalgic reflections on life’s last days. | ||

Hear it next to Rachmaninov's The Isle of the Dead - a spine-chilling evocation of the isle from which no-one returns, and Ravel's Piano Concerto with its still serene slow movement recalling the spirit of Mozart. | De Munt | La Monnaie: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Friday 17-Dec-10 08:00pm Recital Christine Schäfer: "Das himmlische Leben" Soprano Christine Schäfer and pianist Eric Schneider seem to have made a habit of presenting innovative programmes. Several seasons ago they performed Schubert’s Winterreise at La Monnaie, the cycle typically suited to tenors and baritones; in this recital they shed a new light on familiar elements, which they combine in an unexpected context. The work of Bach and Mahler is separated by two centuries; what connects them is the ability to capture in music the elusive things of life. The selfwilled Hugo Wolf surprised his listeners with a concise and extremely rich harmonic idiom, usually with a twist of cynicism. Whereas Wolf appears a very modern romantic, Webern’s George-Lieder are a perfect example of romantic modernism: these five atonal gems move us with their huge emotional power. / Production La Monnaie Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911), Des Knaben Wunderhorn (selection, das himmlische leben etc.) Wolf, Hugo (1860-1903), Mörike Lieder ((selection)) Works by Webern, Anton (1883-1945) (Fünf Lieder aus „Der siebente Ring“ von Stefan George, op.3 (1908-1909)) | ||

| Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR): Henri le Boeuf Concert Hall, Brussels, Rue Ravensteinstraat 23, B1000 Brussels, Belgium Saturday 29-Jan-11 08:00pm Brussels Philharmonic - het Vlaams Radio Orkest An evening full of the pleasures of nature... right in the concert hall. Mendelssohn takes us along the moonlit forest of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare romantic comedy. The French composer Joseph Canteloube evokes the natural beauty of his beloved Auvergne, while Anton Webern fills the hall with the bucolic warmth of an errant summer wind. The evening closes with a few impressions of nature by Claude Debussy. The sweet scent of nature exudes from the music! Canteloube, Joseph (1879-1957), Chants d'Auvergne ((excerpts)) | ||

| Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Wednesday 20-Apr-11 07:30pm Bach (arr. Mahler), Shostakovich, Webern and Beethoven (arr. Mahler) In the heroic, free-flowing momentum of the Third Symphony’s opening, Beethoven poured out his enthusiasm for Napoleon Bonaparte, the military leader who seemed to champion everything the composer stood for. A decade later, things were rather different. Napoleon ignited Beethoven’s fury with his totalitarian egotism and rampage through Europe. As the general invaded Vienna, Beethoven shunned the mass exodus and stayed put. Amidst the canon fire, he penned his Eleventh String Quartet – unmatched in all of Beethoven’s output in its compression, tension and exaggeration. Themes are spat out; silences brood ominously. In Mahler’s orchestral arrangement, Beethoven’s most explosive quartet gains even more firepower. Works by Mahler, Gustav (1860-1911) (suite from the orchestral works of JS Bach) | ||
