| The Royal Hospital Chelsea, Chapel, London, London SW3 4SR, United Kingdom Wednesday 27-Oct-10 07:00pm The RHC Concerts The third concert in The RHC Concerts 2010 season is given by London Conchord Ensemble. Beethoven’s E-flat Quintet is a wonderful example of the composer at his best and is followed by Weber’s virtuoso Flute Trio, scored for the flute in place of the violin. The second half features Brahms’ Horn Trio, a chamber work in four movements, written by the composer to commemorate the death of his mother. Presented in The Wren Chapel of the Royal Hospital Chelsea, this event offers the opportunity to enjoy music in this unique and wonderful setting which is the home of the Chelsea Pensioners. London Conchord Ensemble is a flexible ensemble of internationally recognised young soloists, chamber musicians and orchestra principals. Following their critically acclaimed debut at the Wigmore Hall in October 2002 the ensemble has continued to perform extensively throughout the UK, Europe and North America. | ||

This wistful homage to the composer's late father, principal horn for the Munich Court Orchestra for nearly 50 years, was written during the composer's last years and is imbued with a retrospective character that contrasts sharply with the buoyant mood of the First Concerto he wrote at age 17. Max Reger's playful variations on Mozart's "Alla Turca" Piano Sonata present a more light-hearted look at nostalgia and tribute. Spanish-born veteran Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, artistic director of the Dresden Philharmonic and a favorite of local audiences since his American debut with The Philadelphia Orchestra in 1969, bookends the program with two great moments from opera, Weber's brilliant Overture to Oberon and the effervescent Suite from Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier.

| Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Thursday 2-Dec-10 07:30pm Philharmonia Orchestra Like his friend and protégé Brahms, Schumann delayed writing his first symphony for many years, too in awe of Beethoven to imagine composing in the same form. But in 1841, after discovering Schubert’s Symphony No. 9, he took courage, and composed the Spring symphony, an exuberant work that remains one of his most popular. In this evening’s concert it is paired with Brahms’s own great Violin Concerto, written almost 40 years later, and the overture to Weber’s most well-loved opera, Der Freischütz. | ||

The latter's plaintive strains are reminiscent at times of Bruckner, at times of Richard Strauss and early Schoenberg. | Royal Festival Hall, London, London, United Kingdom Friday 11-Feb-11 07:30pm London Philharmonic Orchestra At home, on 31 May 1841, Clara Schumann noticed the sounds of her husband at work. 'Robert's spirit is very active', she wrote in her diary. 'I hear the D minor wildly sounding in the distance, so that I know already in advance, it is once again a work emerging from the bottom of his heart.' She was right. The work taking shape was the Fourth Symphony: a continuously flowing masterpiece of beauty and subtlety. What Clara couldn't have known was that Robert was, at that very moment, writing her into his symphony. In the delicately winding string and bassoon theme of the work's opening, he movingly and purposefully captures their unerring love.

| Anvil, Basingstoke, Basingstoke RG21 7QR, United Kingdom Saturday 12-Feb-11 07:45pm Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment Mendelssohn's incidental music to A Midsummer Night's Dream is one of the great masterpieces of the early Romantic period, all the more remarkable in that the composer wrote the overture sixteen years before the rest of the score, yet precisely recaptured the spirit of the earlier piece. Weber's first clarinet concerto brilliantly exploits the qualities of instrument, with the music ranging in character from grand declamation to jaunty and playful, with a particularly imaginative and effective slow movement. Beethoven's Symphony no. 7 was first performed at a mammoth concert in 1813 which was one of his greatest public successes. It has remained one of the most performed of his symphonies. | ||

| Anvil, Basingstoke, Basingstoke RG21 7QR, United Kingdom Wednesday 16-Feb-11 07:45pm Philharmonia Orchestra Weber's evocative overture to his fairytale opera Oberon opens the programme. Beethoven's last piano concerto is his most brilliant and powerful, set in his 'heroic' key of E flat. From the stunning first moments, when the piano bursts in with a virtuoso passage of arpeggios and trills, the mood of Olympian power is never far away. The two extrovert outer movements are balanced by the most inward-looking slow movement, which moves into the finale with a simple but magical transition. Schumann's Rhenish Symphony, the last of his four to be written, is the finest product from his final great period of happiness in 1850. Its five grand and lyrical movements were completed in less than six weeks and were a great success when first performed. "Dohnanyi has a way of conducting these works with a brilliant clarity and penetration of vision that at its best can convey an ongoing sense of discovery."
