| De Munt | La Monnaie: Grand Hall, Brussels, Muntplein-Place de la Monnaie, 1000 Brussels, Belgium Thursday 16-Sep-10 08:00pm Recital Marie-Nicole Lemieux Vienna and Paris, the two musical metropolises at the turn of the century, are the point of departure for a recital in the Monnaie Opera House featuring works by several lesser-known composers. It has only been fairly recently that the songs of Alma Mahler were given the attention they deserve and an increasing number of musicians has derived enormous fulfi lment from the seemingly endless melodies and surprising harmonic transitions that are so typical of her work. Since her debut appearance at the Queen Elisabeth international competition, Marie-Nicole Lemieux has impressed listeners with her rich, full-bodied voice – with just the right colour for the late Romantic repertoire. Accompanied by Daniel Blumenthal at the piano, Lemieux will sing 19th century songs written by Mahler’s wife Alma and several French contemporaries from France: Franz Schreker is a seldom-heard, but no less welcome composer of Lieder. His work will be fl anked by that of his Parisian counterparts Claude Debussy and Ernest Chausson, as well as Belgian composer Guillaume Lekeu, who tragically died too young and wrote both the text and music of his captivating Trois poèmes. You may be assured that Alma Mahler’s musical pearls will overwhelm you with their forceful lyricism, daring chromatic harmony and – according to La Scena Musicale – their “deep and complex emotions”. It is still confounding that Gustav Mahler required her to give up composition as a condition for their marriage! Mahler, Alma (1879-1964), Fünf Lieder | ||
