| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 25-May-13 07:30pm La Bayadère - Revival La Bayadère was the first work in a series of successful reconstructions of 19th century repertory which has been – almost – completed in Munich. This splendid full-length gem of a true Russian classic by master choreographer Marius Petipa, focuses on the two characters of Nikija and Solor, caught in a complicated triangle relationship. Petipa stands for the great era of the Russian Imperial ballet at the Mariinsky Theater St. Petersburg. Most audiences today associate him with the famous and ever popular Tchaikovsky-ballets: The Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake or Don Quixote with music by Ludwig Minkus.
Created in 1877, La Bayadère is a mixture of an exotic tale, a thriller and a celebration of virtuosity. At its center are the two lovers: the priestess, the Bayadère, Nikija and the soldier Solor. The ladder however is promised in marriage to Gamzatti, the daughter of the Radja, whilst the Great Brahman has fallen in love with his priestess Nikija. Nikija falls victim to murder by her rival and Solor dreams himself into the 'Kingdom of Shades' in order to be reunited with his love. What follows is one of the most famous, magnificent white acts in ballet history.
The Bavarian State Ballet has worked on this version, together with the French choreographer Patrice Bart and the Japanese stage- and costume designer Tomio Mohri. The heart of the piece, the 'Kingdom of Shades' act, the betrothal celebration scene with it ceremonious line filing dance and some elaborate pantomime scenes can be seen in its original version.

Caravaggio used to venture the threshold beyond the pale throughout his life. He was seen for admiration of his work and harsh opposition towards his extraordinary realism in painting human beings. Due to his passionate personality, he encountered more than several conflicts with people around him, sponsors, and the law. One of his foremost artistic twists was the extreme contrast between brightness and darkness, light and shadow.
Mauro Bigonzetti is one of the leading choreographers of the Italian ballet which freed itself from the predominance of mainly classical opera companies in the 80’s. He created his choreographies mainly for the Aterballetto in Reggio Emilia that helped him to fame and worldwide attention. “When I think of Caravaggio, I think of the artist and the human being at the same time. These are the two sides of the human existence that interest me in particular. The relations of these two worlds are the inspiration for this work: the inner world on the one hand – and how it evolves artistically on the other.”
Mauro Bigonzetti has developed the piece CARAVAGGIO in collaboration with the Staatsballett Berlin.
45 minutes before each performance (except premieres), there is an introduction in the opera house (in German).
It is prepared and moderated by students of the institute of dance studies (Institut für Tanzwissenschaft) of Freie Universität Berlin. | ||

It combines two milestones of recent ballet history with a new creation, and offers the opportunity to witness the combination of three fascinating dance languages in one evening. The American William Forsythe has influenced and shaped ballet in the second half of the 20th century like no other choreographer. In his work, he explores and crosses the boundaries of dance as an art form, time and again. In New Sleep, created in 1987 for the San Francisco Ballet, three clown-like figures – accompanied by electronic music by Thom Willems – fall under the spell of a yardstick, a potted plant and a collection of bowling balls.
For the first time, Zurich Ballet will be working with the Romanian choreographer Edward Clug, who rose to international fame primarily thanks to his ballet Radio and Juliet, a modern interpretation of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet set to the music of the rock band Radiohead. Clug’s pieces, which enchant audiences with their often absurd tempi and their wealth of choreographic detail, have been performed in Lisbon, Zagreb, Essen and at the Stuttgart Ballet, among other locations.
Having thrilled audiences in Zurich in 2004 with their furiously witty choreography, Skew Whiff, choreographers Lightfoot/León now present their ballet Sleight of Hand. The Englishman Paul Lightfoot and the Spanish woman Sol León met in 1987 in the ensemble of the Nederlands Dans Theaters (NDT) and are among the internationally most sought-after choreographers. They have succeeded Hans van Manen and Jiří Kylián as representatives of modern dance in the Netherlands. Paul Lightfoot took over the directorship of the NDT in the 2011/12 season. In the mysterious darkness of Sleight of Hand an encrypted fantasy unfurls; its dance and theatrical roots lie in the story of a family fraught with conflict. The title, Sleight of Hand, is a reference to the art of card-playing. | ||
