| Opernhaus: Studiobühne, Zürich, Falkenstrasse 1, Zürich 8008, Switzerland Wednesday 19-Jun-13 07:00pm Young Choreographers The “Young choreographers” series aims to identify and promote young talent at an early stage: Zurich Ballet’s talented young choreographers will be in the limelight once a season. Dancers from the ensemble interested in creating choreography are given the opportunity to present themselves as choreographers. They thus have the appealing task of discovering dance from another perspective and jointly presenting a mutually inspiring ballet evening. These young artists will rehearse their new creations with their dancing colleagues and will also be able to try their hands at stage and costume design. On five evenings, a fascinating variety of choreographic and theatrical ideas will be presented to audiences on the Studio stage, and it is possible that audiences may soon encounter any one of these names on the principal ballet stage. | ||

After a second successful run and celebrating the company’s tenth anniversary at Sadler’s Wells last year, Some Like It Hip Hop returns to the Peacock Theatre to kick-start the summer. Fast becoming a modern classic, Some Like It Hip Hop unites truly sensational dancing and a typically clever and engrossing storyline with infectious “wit, heart and magnificent energy” (The Independent). With a nod to Billy Wilder’s Some Like It Hot and Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, it tells a comical tale of love, mistaken identity, cross-dressing and revolution, all played out in ZooNation’s trademark style of hip hop, comedy and physical theatre. Directed by Sadler’s Wells Associate Artist Kate Prince, Some Like It Hip Hop also features a ground-shaking original soundtrack, live singing and some of the UK’s top hip hop dance talent.

| National Theatre, Munich, Munich, Germany Saturday 22-Jun-13 07:00pm Illusions - like Swan Lake Music by Tchaikovsky, Pyotr Ilyich (1840-1893) Choreography by John Neumeier …Silence. An empty room in a gloomy castle. Scattered throughout the room, concealed sculptures fill the empty space. Shown in by reverent guards, a man stares into nowhere. The gate slams shut behind him. Gradually, the king begins to grasp – imprisoned and deprived of power – his situation, his surroundings. In an introverted gesture, he places his hand on his heart… the music meets his lament with the first notes of Swan Lake...
The premiere of llusions – Like Swan Lake was a celebrated success of the Ballet Festival Week of 2011. Finally, John Neumeier’s ballet about the fairy tale king had been brought to its original setting.
Illusions is a Royal thriller with traditional folklore dancing, complete with a good dose of local Bavarian color. The ever-present reference to one of the greatest works in ballet history becomes most apparent in the second act, where Lew Iwanow’s original choreography is integrated: “The reconstruction of a golden hour of St. Petersburg ballet history, elaborate stage design magic supported by the captivating musical score. Most of all, it is a ballet drama that touches us right at the core because of its soulful, vivid characters, instead of showcasing lifeless swans and princes.”Image credit: Charles Tandy

„It was one of the first new musical compositions commissioned by Merce Cunningham since the death of John Cage in 1992. Like all of Merce‘s work it involved a collaboration with visual artists, in this case Paul Kaiser and Shelley Eshkar who had developed a very striking technique of video motion capture. In working on the music Merce and I agreed that we would follow the method established between himself and John Cage of working independently but towards a common goal, thereby avoiding any planned one-to-one relationship between music, dance and décor.”

Ballet by Richard Siegal
„…suddenly, Richard Siegal stops the rehearsal, tells what he intended to insert here and there, asks the audience for their opinion, drops all inquiries and jumps to the next scene (…) it takes a while to realize what game is being played here – but even then, a hint of uncertainty is left behind. The means of presentation are chosen intentionally: the casual tone of voice, the official tone, minute details in choreographed passages where he articulates every single muscle like a cat, stand-up comedy followed by solemn seriousness. A wide-spectrum.” – TANZ magazine wrote about Richard Siegal as choreographer and performer. His new creation is yet to be named.Image credit: Merce Cunningham © Annie Liebovitz

| Sadler's Wells, London, Rosebery Avenue,, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom Tuesday 25-Jun-13 07:30pm Rosas & Ictus — Drumming One of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most fascinating choreographic works, Drumming, returns to Sadler’s Wells in full after part one was performed in De Keersmaeker’s celebrated Steve Reich Evening in 2008. A pioneer of minimalist music, Steve Reich’s work has been a catalyst throughout De Keersmaeker’s career ever since she created Fase (1982), her debut as a choreographer. Since then his distinctive style has formed the basis of numerous works by De Keersmaeker including Rain. Composed by Reich in 1970, Drumming is based on a single rhythmic motif which multiplies, develops and accelerates into an endless interplay of canons. This powerful score is brought to life with breathtaking precision as contemporary music ensemble Ictus perform live on stage, whilst 13 dancers move to the beat in this energetic and skilfully choreographed piece. As part of Sadler’s Sampled, audiences can enjoy this truly live spectacle where no two performances are ever the same. | ||

Christian Spuck has long been fascinated by the works of the German playwright Georg Büchner, whose work stands between German Romanticism and the emerging Modern Age. Taking a coolly analytical view, the author performed autopsies of the human soul, as it were, and as the poet Durs Grünbein put it, “registered the fissures that pass through the individual at an early stage, and certainly not coldly.” From 1836, Georg Büchner lectured in medicine in Zurich, and died here at the age of only 23. Christian Spuck created the full-length narrative ballet Leonce and Lena for the Aalto Ballet Essen in 2008. Zurich Ballet will now perform the piece for the first time in Switzerland – only a few weeks before Büchner’s 200th birthday.
The royal children Leonce and Lena have been betrothed without knowing one another. Both decide to escape the wedding. Leonce, who is tormented by boredom, intends to go to Italy with his companion Valerio and live there in indolence; Lena is persuaded to escape by her governess. The two encounter one another en route – and fall in love. Ignorant of one another’s identity, they appear masked at the court of Leonce’s father and are married.
Christian Spuck transforms Büchner’s subtly sarcastic comedy into a high-spirited, fast-paced and imaginative farce of automata, at the same time providing the danced caricature of the small German state. The airy, at times grotesque pieces of the king of waltz, Johann Strauss, inspire the tragicomic story and underline its burlesque elements, as do the modern sounds of Alfred Schnittke and Bernd Alois Zimmermann.

| Sadler's Wells, London, Rosebery Avenue,, London EC1R 4TN, United Kingdom Wednesday 26-Jun-13 07:30pm Rosas & Ictus — Drumming One of Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s most fascinating choreographic works, Drumming, returns to Sadler’s Wells in full after part one was performed in De Keersmaeker’s celebrated Steve Reich Evening in 2008.

(Composer Gavin Bryars about Biped)
