| Royal Theater Carré, Amsterdam, Amstel 115-125, Amsterdam 1018 EM, Netherlands Sunday 2-Jun-13 08:30pm El Gusto - Casbah Blues In their younger years, the musicians of the chaabi orchestra El Gusto enjoyed great fame in the Casbah, the traditional quarter clustered around the citadel of Algiers. Side by side Jews and Muslims, Africans and Europeans played and sung their traditional songs about love, heartbreak, friendship and betrayal. That is until the Algerian revolution drove them apart. Now these musicians are all in their seventies and eighties, but they still have a great passion for the chaabi, entrancing folk music with influences from North Africa, Andalusia and the Middle-East. The musicians were gathered together from all parts of the world for a historical reunion, proving that music has no age limit. For they still play their instruments as if they were dancing with a beautiful woman, and still their deep-rooted songs ‘make you forget hunger, thirst or grief’.Tickets €35/20, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. In her solo work she draws out a broad spectrum of sounds from her instrument, ranging from intimate simplicity to huge soundscapes. At the Bimhuis, Guðnadóttir will play two works on newly developed electric cellos: one utilising feedback and one which is connected to wooden sculptures causing them to vibrate along with the music. The main piece she will be playing is the title work of her latest album Leyfðu ljosinu; a multi-layered, hypnotic sound construction consisting of vocals and cello, which gradually swells to massive proportions.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Tuesday 11-Jun-13 08:30pm Desdemona Toni Morrison's response to Othello discusses racism, war and oppression.
Nobel prize laureate Toni Morrison wrote Desdemona after a discussion about Othello with the director Peter Sellars. In her text, Morrison gives a voice to Desdemona, who has a modest part in Shakespeare’s play. From the grave, the Shakespearean heroine fills in the gaps in her history through an intimate dialogue with Barbary, the African nanny who raised her.
With her mesmerising voice, award-winning Malian singer-songwriter Rokia Traoré gives a virtuoso performance as Barbary. Traoré also wrote the music, which is performed by two musicians and two singers from Mali. As the play develops, we discover a different Desdemona, a woman of flesh and blood who speaks out about racism, war and oppression – and the transformative power of love.

Newly interpreted in an exciting
Early-Fusion-ProjectIn the 16th century a clergyman from the Finnish town of Turku, which was then ruled by Sweden, put together a collection of "pious singings" (Piae Cantiones) for the students of the cathedral school. Since it was published in the then "Swedish" city of Greifswald, the precious treasures survived for future generations. Some of the melodies have Scandinavian origins, some are "imported" from Germany, Bohemia and the Mediterranean region and often date back into medieval times. The ENSEMBLE LA CHIMERA refer to their original programme concept as "Early Fusion. The musicians combine old instruments like lutes and violas da gamba with Norway’s traditional Hardanger violin and the modern saxophone – a surprising and imaginative transfer of sounds between the ages.

| Bimhuis, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 3, Amsterdam, Netherlands Saturday 15-Jun-13 08:30pm Cabaret Songs Singer Jamie McDermott of The Irrepressibles adds colour and passion to a radical new interpretation of Benjamin Britten’s popular Cabaret Songs. Britten wrote the songs in 1937, inspired by the Berlin nightlife of the interbellum.
On the occasion of Britten’s centenary, composer Conor Mitchell added eight new compositions to the four original songs. Four of these are set to poems which W.H. Auden had written for Britten, but which were never used; and four are set to new lyrics by Mark Ravenhill. The songs deal with excitement, ecstasy, doubt and despair. They make up a subtle commentary on Britten’s relationship with Auden, their impending break-up and his budding love for his future life partner Peter Pears. A music performance of obscured love letters.Tickets €22, students/CJO €17.50 all categories. Running time 1 hour no internval.Image credit: Ada Nieuwendijk

| New Garden: Palace Park, Potsdam, Potsdam, Germany Saturday 15-Jun-13 08:30pm Folk in the Garden Keeping tradition does not mean to keep ashes, but to make sure the fire does not stop burning. True to this principle we use 2013 for turning from Jazz to Folk in the Garden. Scandinavia’s folk music scene reinvigorates the local musical tradition. Old melodies are lovingly and respectfully absorbed without any stylistic inhibitions and they are linked to multiple worlds of contemporary musical experience. Be there when a number of illustrious representatives of their art take over the park at Heiliger See and the spark once again truly lights the fire. Performances happen simultaneously in various locations both indoors and outdoors between Orangery and Marble Palace and with a trip to the Sea Shell Grotto and the Bark Kitchen at Jungfernsee. You receive your complete program overview at the entrance so feel free to individually create your very own musical course while enjoying the atmospherically lit park in its vespertine beauty.
Look forward to the following musicians:
Led by one of Norway’s best folk fiddlers the GJERMUND LARSEN TRIO with Andreas Utnem at the piano & the harmonium and contrabass player Sondre Mejsfjord won the Norwegian Grammy. Their poetic creations make them one of the scene’s most exciting appearances.

Hanne Dieserud and Christina Lindgren The first sense that is fully developed in an unborn baby is listening: the inner ear with the listening organs reaches its final size in the fifth month of the pregnancy! So a child has already listened to and experienced a multitude of sounds, tones and rhythms before it is born. "Why not continue straight away?" thought Hanne Dieserud and Christina Lindgren. They got together with Maja Ratkje and invented a baby opera truly any child can understand. Using their voices and an array of fantastical musical instruments the two performers unfold a mystical underwater world filled with dreamily soft sounds in the intimate atmosphere of a shell-shaped tent. He really enjoyed Stockholm’s taverns where he sang songs accompanied by a cister that delighted both the king and his drinking mates. He was a gifted improvisational poet and found tunes for his singing in just about any place. That is not to say that he pulled his art out of a hat: because art is nice, but hard work (German comedian Karl Valentin). Nowadays the genius songwriter Carl Michael Bellman is treasured as a poet laureate in Sweden. His songs always capture life in all its beauty and decrepitude and they always storm directly to the listener’s heart. True to the spirit of their creator we serve them with an opulent Sunday breakfast. Nota bene: a hangover is welcome but not required. The buffet offers Scandinavian delicacies including salmon & matjes herring, köttbullar, roast beef & ham, a selection of salads & cheeses, blueberry pancakes, fresh waffles and much more. | Orford Church, Orford IP12 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 16-Jun-13 09:30pm The Church Parables: Curlew River - I Initially inspired by Britten’s encounter with Noh theatre while on tour in Japan in 1955, Curlew River tells the haunting story of a mother's search for her lost son. Britten transforms the Noh play Sumidagawa into an English medieval mystery play, capturing remarkable similarities between the two distant cultures. The setting is shifted to medieval East Anglia – a feat easily achieved in Orford’s magnificent twelfth-century Church of St Bartholomew. The acclaimed company Mahogany Opera takes Britten’s assimilation of East and West, referencing both Noh tradition and medieval western iconography. Premiered in Orford at the 1964 Aldeburgh Festival, Curlew River is both heart-rending and remarkably evocative of Britten’s Suffolk: in the words of composer Robin Holloway, the spare setting “suffices to render river, marsh and circling birds with startling vividness”. and 1968 respectively. They develop the pioneering ideas of Curlew River – the minimal instrumental and vocal forces and the inclusion of plainchant – but
have very different moods. With The Burning Fiery Furnace, Britten’s aimed to create ‘something much less sombre, an altogether gayer affair’, based on the Old Testament story of Nebuchadnezzar and the three Israelites.
Meanwhile The Prodigal Son was inspired by Rembrandt’s painting The Return of the Prodigal, which Britten had seen two years earlier on a trip to Leningrad. Mahogany’s production takes the principal established in Curlew River of merging East with West and extends it to the two later works, first contrasting Balinese dance drama with stained glass and then Middle Eastern Sufism with the art of Rembrandt and Bosch. Mahogany’s production takes the principal established in Curlew River of merging East with West and extends it to the two later works, first contrasting Balinese dance drama with stained glass and then Middle Eastern Sufism with the art of Rembrandt and Bosch. Orford Church 7pm (The Burning Fiery Furnace 7–8.15pm; The Prodigal Son 9.30–10.45pm) Tickets are limited to two per booker

| Park Sanssouci: Nordic Garden, Potsdam, Mulberry Ave, Potsdam, Germany Friday 21-Jun-13 10:00pm The Troll Night Twilight in the quiet park – and the Nordic Garden turns into a magical forest. Mysterious sounds are heard, the grottos are filled with archaic singing and call on wondrous and eerie creatures to appear from their hiding places. Trolls, elves and all kinds of mystical beings appear from and disappear into the darkness: midsummer night in Sanssouci.
You are strolling through the nightly park between Nordic Garden and Orangery Terraces. First you may meet a vocal enchantress, then there is a Sami evocator and an enchanting choir and secret musicians let you listen to their invisible music: even musicologist Johann Mattheson referred to a reliable source when he reported "underground cliff concerts", that confuse the minds of decent Norwegians during certain nights. Allow yourself to be enchanted by an unforgettable midsummer night’s dream in Sanssouci.

| Bridgewater Hall, Manchester, Manchester M2 3WS, United Kingdom Sunday 7-Jul-13 07:30pm John Tavener Manchester International Festival returns this July and we are delighted once again to be collaborating with the BBC Philharmonic orchestra for a very special evening of music at The Bridgewater Hall.Sir John Tavener, the much-loved English composer who’s Song for Athene was performed at the end of Princess Diana’s funeral, presents an evening of new and rarely performed work with the BBC Philharmonic. The evening will include three world premières, and joining the BBC Philharmonic and conductor Tecwyn Evans is tenor John Mark Ainsley; bass-baritone Jonathan Lemalu; soprano Elin Manahan Thomas; and cellist Steven Isserlis. Tavener’s music is celebrated for its enduring beauty and deeply spiritual outlook and for this special evening he will be working directly with the faiths that have influenced him. If Ye Love Me is a new piece written especially for the MIF Sacred Sounds Women’s Choir, formed from faith communities across Greater Manchester. The evening includes Tavener’s Mahamatar, set to Werner Herzog’s film Pilgrimage, alongside special guest star, Abida Parveen, one of the world’s greatest Sufi singers and completing the evening is a rare performance of In Alium, Tavener’s radical Proms commission from 1968. | ||

| Royal Albert Hall, London, Kensington Gore, London SW7 2AP, United Kingdom Tuesday 16-Jul-13 10:15pm Prom 7 - Gospel Prom What does gospel music mean today? The Proms explores this emotive and richly varied world – the meeting and mixing of musical styles of four continents. Leading vocal ensembles combine with community choirs and soloists to create a thrilling massed wall of sound for favourites such as ‘How Great Thou Art’, ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ and ‘O Happy Day’, interspersed with individual contributions. The British-Caribbean People’s Christian Fellowship Choir juxtaposes popular hymns with calypso choruses, while the London Adventist Chorale reminds us how African Americans turned to spirituals in their fight for freedom. Muyiwa & Riversongz bring West African highlife praise to another level, while the London Community Gospel Choir merges Caribbean and African traditions with new songs inspired by funk and rock.Tickets £12 - £16. | ||
