The Hallé and Markus Stenz with Wagner and Bruckner
Image credit: Markus Stenz © Catrin MoritzPrincipal Guest Conductor Markus Stenz joined the Hallé for a programme of richly romantic music in nature and name, from the impassioned chromaticism of Tristan and Isolde to the peaks and valleys of Bruckner. Stenz seemed to shirk away from easy heroism all evening, opting instead for softer and harder-won resolution.

A century and a half later, the novelty of chromaticism and extended use of suspension has somewhat worn off, but the music’s ability to project passion remains, particularly in the hands of all-star players such as the Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, hand-picked from the top orchestras in Germany.

The Gustav Mahler Youth Orchestra's Easter Tour in Vienna

The Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester is currently on their annual Easter tour and the programme on Thursday night, while eclectic in appearance, was consistent with their commitment to the European late-romantic and modernist traditions.
