| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Tuesday 30-Jul-13 07:00pm The libretto based on the epic poem by Alexander Pushkin and the much-loved, highly-emotional music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky are the elements that, for many opera lovers, make this “the most Russian of Russian” operas. Emerging as the main character alongside Onegin himself, a somewhat shallow character bored with his present life, is the young Tatyana, and the libretto is ultimately about her.
Eugene Onegin features some of the finest and most popular music – both arias and orchestral numbers – ever composed by Tchaikovsky. Many of them are frequently heard on their own out of context. This masterpiece is a veritable treasure trove of Russian opera.

| Olavinlinna Castle, Savonlinna, Savonlinna 57150, Finland Wednesday 31-Jul-13 07:00pm Completing the Verdi jubilee at the Savonlinna Opera Festival is one of the two works chosen by the visiting opera house, the Mikhailovsky Theatre from St. Petersburg. An opera seized in its day by the censor because of its delicate subject, A Masked Ball has since proved to be one of Verdi’s most popular operas. It has been in the repertoire of a guest opera house at the Festival twice before.
The fictive love story built round the assassination of the enlightened King Gustavus III of Sweden is the libretto’s main plot. The king’s secretary, appalled by the sovereign’s treachery, joins the conspirators against the monarchy and gets a chance to seek revenge at a big masked ball held at court.
