As I settled into my seat in the Kaufman Theater at the 92nd Street Y, the man next to me turned to his wife to say: “This concert is going to be quite the journey.” Snickering to myself, I dismissed the man’s comment as trite. But by the end of the all-Liszt program, I felt bulldozed by Garrick Ohlsson’s performance.

French pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard gave the first of two concerts at London’s Queen Elizabeth Hall to celebrate Franz Liszt’s bicentenary, and to coincide with the release of his ambitious recording, The Liszt Project.
In an inventive and impeccably performed programme, Aimard placed works by Liszt alongside music by Bartok, contemporary composer Marco Stroppa, Ravel and Messiaen to demonstrate Liszt’s profound and lasting influence, and as a way of blurring the borders between one style and another. Connections were made not just musically, but also thematically and metaphorically in a spell-binding concert of intense concentration and illuminating pianism.

| For the last week, the Hungarian Cultural Centre has been promoting a series of varied concerts at Kings Place to celebrate Liszt's Bicentenary. The closing concert was on Saturday night: a piano recital by Dénes Várjon, with an all-Liszt programme culminating in the B minor Sonata. We may not see much of Várjon in the UK, but he's a regular on the European festival circuit, and highly respected in Hungary. He is a professor at the Ferenc Liszt University in Budapest, and cuts a rather professorial figure in glasses and tail coat. Read full review... | |
