Despite competing concerts held downtown that very same evening, those who supported the HKS were rewarded by their fine performances.

Los Angeles, on Thursday night, was seized by a sudden heat wave that was accompanied with stifling humidity more fitting for Manila or Saigon than the Hollywood Hills. Grey clouds looming on the horizon, which grew and dissipated as the day progressed, swelled and darkened as the sun set. Later they tore open with a downpour that caused many in the audience to flee for the exits, soaking those not lucky enough to come prepared with ponchos.

De Doelen: Grote Zaal
The Rotterdam Philharmonic's excellent Prokofiev and Rachmaninov
Image credit: Hans Graf © Christian SteinerIn memory of violist Coen van der Heide who passed away earlier in October, the Rotterdam Philharmonic opened with the second part of Antonín Dvořák’s Serenade for Strings, which was deeply moving and followed by a minute of silence. Ottorino Respighi’s Fontana di Roma was the first piece on the official program. It is a four-movement orchestral suite written in 1917, each movement depicting a different fountain in Rome (as the title would suggest). It is the first of a tryptich of orchestral works inspired by Rome, a city where Respighi moved to in 1913.
