Standing ovation after standing ovation. The packed hall at St George’s received a treat in form of an evening of Haydn played by fantastic musicians. The stage was filled with energy from start to end in a programme, from the Oxford Philomusica’s ‘Best of Haydn’ series, which displayed a variety of Joseph Haydn’s works. Haydn (1732-1809) is recognised as the ‘father’ of the symphony and occupied a pivotal role in the history of the piano sonata. How better to pay homage to him than to perform some of his major piano works and finish it all off with a symphony?

On Wednesday night the Turkish-born star pianist, all-rounder musician Fazil Say returned to the Konzerthaus in Berlin shortly after completing his successful year of artist-in-residence there. Say, who also composes and plays Jazz, is known for his unconventional approach. On the evening's programme were piano hits by Haydn, Stravinsky and Beethoven as well as an exciting set of short pieces composed in the 1950s by the German avant-garde composer Bernd Alois Zimmermann.

To say that the diminutive Mr Kadouch is a very gifted young pianist with a brilliant technique and a bright future is an understatement. The program overall was very well-played. But the biblical adage “for unto whomsoever much is given, of him shall be much required” came to mind – is this all there is? He is very musical and possessed of a prodigious technique – but what about that ineffable something that one sometimes hears, that moves us beyond words? Do we attend concerts to be impressed or to be moved? Back to that question later.
