| Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 6-Oct-13 03:00pm Smart performs Britten There’s an inspiring mix of beautiful classics to be enjoyed during the RTWSO’s 92nd season, and you can experience six afternoons of unforgettable music-making. Benjamin Britten was the 20th century’s consummate musician. To celebrate his centenary, this opening concert features two of his pieces. Matinées Musicales is a witty reworking of Rossini, which revels in dance rhythms and demonstrates Britten’s tongue-in-cheek sense of humour. Callum Smart will perform Britten’s Violin Concerto. This early work represents a real milestone in the composer’s development. The orchestral sound is assured, the solo writing brilliant and idiomatic, and the cumulative impact considerable. Berlioz was driven by a musical vision that went beyond his time. Unrequited love, opium, suicide, the guillotine and a monstrous Witches’ Sabbath are among the lurid ingredients of his Symphonie Fantastique, a work of vast imagination and originality. Here is theatre in symphonic form. Sponsored by Greenbank Wealth Management. | ||

| Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 3-Nov-13 03:00pm Moore performs Pakhmutova The focus is on Russian music throughout this concert, which begins with Tchaikovsky’s celebrated suite from The Sleeping Beauty. Arguably the richest of his ballet scores, the music reveals the extraordinary dramatic instinct of this popular composer. Although symphonies and chamber music represent the core of his achievements, Shostakovich composed ‘light music’ with enthusiasm and enjoyment. His entertaining Ballet Suite No 1 could surprise those who know Shostakovich just as a ‘serious’ composer. Alexandra Pakhmutova is one of the best-loved composers in Russia today and her talents have been recognised by many government awards. Kate Moore, Principal Trumpet of the BBC Concert Orchestra and the RTWSO, will perform Pakhmutova’s Trumpet Concerto, a beautifully proportioned work in the neo-romantic tradition. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition was inspired by the paintings of his friend, Vladimir Hartmann. The original piano suite, orchestrated by Ravel, became a potent example of his desire to capture ‘realistically’ pictorial ideas in music. Sponsored by Greenbank Wealth Management. | ||

| Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 1-Dec-13 03:00pm Christmas Concert Winner of BBC Young Musician 2012, Laura van der Heijden is acknowledged as one of the finest artists of her generation. For her début with the RTWSO, she will perform the Cello Concerto No 1 by Saint-Saëns. This fluid, integrated piece has an inventive structural format showing influences of Liszt and Wagner. There is exquisite writing for the soloist, enabling the singing tone of the cello to shine through orchestral textures. Our family Christmas concert also features an entertaining mix of pieces by two French Romantic composers, Massenet and Chabrier, as well as a colourful, sensuous waltz by the Austro-Hungarian, Lehár. British works are represented in a tone poem by Coates and Britten’s witty and virtuosic rhapsody on God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen, with variations that do not wander too far from home. Bryan Kelly offers us a new suite evoking a traditional Christmas celebration. Well-known carols are shaken up into a cocktail of sparkling sounds and beautifully decorated with festive embellishments. The RTWSO will give the first performance. | Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Feb-14 03:00pm Melda performs Chopin With its characteristic Celtic colouring and rugged rhythms, MacCunn’s overture provides an unashamedly lyrical, romantic view of the Scottish landscape. This charming piece, which shows influences of Parry and Stanford, was inspired by lines from a poem by Sir Walter Scott. Lara Melda, who won the BBC Young Musician 2010, will be the soloist in Chopin’s youthful Piano Concerto No 1. The piece is dominated by the brilliant piano part that the performer-composer wrote to showcase his virtuosity. There are singing melodies in abundance and, after a rich, lyrical first movement, the central Romanza is followed by a vivacious rondo. Bruckner’s reputation rests with his symphonies and the ‘Romantic’ has always been one of his most popular. It’s conceived on a grand scale with highly dramatic, expansive outer movements. The work contains wonderful moments of quietness, contrasted by exciting climaxes. The magnificence of the orchestral sound often comes across as mystical, religious and elemental. | Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 2-Mar-14 03:00pm Wood performs Bruch Mozart’s popular and tuneful ‘Haffner’ Symphony opens this concert in grand style. This festive piece displays a positive attitude to life and the emotional intensity that was to characterise the composer’s later symphonies. Alexandra Wood is renowned for her rich tone, energetic performances and communication with audiences. She will join the RTWSO for one of Bruch’s signature pieces. The Scottish Fantasy is infused with charming folk songs. At times, the solo violin sings quietly, as if alone in the highlands. Elsewhere, Bruch’s luscious score conveys a picture of Scotland that is full of raw and untamed natural beauty. Schumann’s symphonies stand out by virtue of their autobiographical content and originality. After extensive revision, the imaginative and resourceful Symphony No 4 was shaped into a single span of invention. The atmospheric opening contains thematic elements that enable all four movements to flow together into a single entity, building towards the exuberant conclusion. | Assembly Hall Theatre, Tunbridge Wells, Tunbridge Wells TN1 2LU, United Kingdom Sunday 6-Apr-14 03:00pm Milne performs Romantics Viewed as a whole, Haydn’s 100-plus classical symphonies comprise an amazing range of thought, variety of form and breadth of style. In his First Symphony, Haydn succeeded in giving the immensely inventive work a distinctive character and personality of its own. If we were not spoilt for choice, Symphony No 1 would be more widely performed today. The acclaimed Scottish soprano, Lisa Milne, appears in operas and performs with orchestras all over the world. Her radiant tone will be well suited to the rich Romanticism contained in the ravishing Four Last Songs by Richard Strauss, an undisputed master of music for the female voice. Lisa Milne will also bring her operatic character and power to Mahler’s glorious Fourth Symphony. It’s the brightest and most transparent of his symphonies, highlighting the simple, delicate side of the composer’s emotional range. This sunny and subtle symphony culminates in a musical representation of a child’s view of heaven. Sponsored by Greenbank Wealth Management. | ||
