Five for the price of four: Lawrence Power joins the Takács Quartet for Brahms at St George's Bristol
Image credit: Takács Quartet © Ellen AppelJohannes Brahms and his music have a reputation for being somewhat meaty, and so an English Sunday afternoon seems an appropriate time to hear two of his chamber works side by side. Served up by the Takács Quartet joined by violist Lawrence Power, this concert provided the St George’s Bristol audience with plenty to get their teeth into; Sunday roasts were not the only things being digested, as these world-renowned players performed Brahms’ two String Quintets, Opp. 88 and 111.

Excellent rapport: The Takács Quartet and Marc-André Hamelin at Koerner Hall
Image credit: Takács Quartet © Ellen AppelEach time I hear the Takács Quartet in concert a new excellence comes through: this time it is their gentleness. Schubert’s String Quartet in A minor, “Rosamunde” is allowed to unfold gently, as the petals of a rose open themselves. Edward Dusinberre’s first violin sings the wistful theme – a reference to the composer’s heavy-hearted song “Gretchen at the Spinning Wheel”, whose lyric sets the mood: “My peace is gone, my heart is heavy, I’ll find it never, never again”.

Take it in: Takács Quartet wow the crowd at St George's Bristol
Image credit: Takács Quartet © Peter SmithA full house at St George’s was spoilt with some seriously fantastic music in this concert. String quartets don’t come much better than the Takács Quartet. Versatile, passionate, and technically very accurate, there was a real quality of care that went into their performance. They had their ears close to their instruments, to tune in to every note, to give the audience the best sound possible. As a result, the music felt selfless and as though it was being offered to everyone in the room for their own personal listening.

Dark Dvořák, light Haydn with the Takács Quartet
Image credit: Takacs Quartet, © Ellen AppelThis was a short BBC Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert, but a very good one. Of course, nothing less would be expected from the Takács Quartet, who surely have a very good claim to be the world's foremost string quartet. Even if only for a sold-out hour, all the characteristics which make them great were amply on show here.
