| 17-Nov-2012 City Recital Hall Angel Place | Russian visions with the ACO in Sydney |
A feast of Russian chamber music was what was on offer for the Australian Chamber Orchestra’s latest concert. Featuring music by Prokofiev, Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky in a program entitled Russian Visions, the ACO with guest soloists Steven Osborne and David Elton provided an evening of music which was visionary, electrifying and intense in equal measures. The ACO’s programs are always carefully constructed and innovative, and tonight’s was no exception, beginning with an extremely effective reworking of Prokofiev’s Visions Fugitives.Read full review... | |
| 15-Apr-2012 Konzerthaus: Mozart Saal | Romantic sextets from the Quatuor Ebène |
Regarded as one of the best young string quartets around today, the Quatuor Ebène have made a name for themselves with their homogeneity of sound, in equal parts vibrant and mellifluous, and the powerful immediacy of their playing. Hearing them for the third time in this concert, I was no less taken with this or their considerable musicianship, but had my reservations about the prominence of a certain Gallic sensibility in Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht.

| 6-Dec-2011 Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall | Sergey Khachatryan and Amsterdam Sinfonietta's "Visions Fugitives" |
The Amsterdam Sinfonietta is an ensemble that is comfortable with both old and new repertoire, and often performes contemporary music. The concert I saw was right in the middle of a tour with violinist Sergey Khachatryan featuring Vivaldi’s Four Seasons and Tchaikovksy’s Souvenir de Florence, but at the Muziekgebouw the program was different; instead of Vivaldi we were treated to Prokofiev’s Vision Fugitives (arranged by Rudolf Barshai) and the world première of Arthur Aharonian’s Violin Concerto No. 2 with star violinist Sergey Khachatryan.
