Built by the prolific George Gilbert Scott (1811–78), St Mary’s Episcopal Cathedral in Glasgow was opened in 1871. Now featuring Gwyneth Leech’s striking 1990 murals, including a triptych of the Easter Passion set in nearby Kelvingrove Park, it is a frequent venue for events such as this RSNO chamber concert. On Thursday 15 March, the Jerusalem String Quartet strode onto the stage of Richardson Auditorium all wearing the same smart suits. The four young players played a pleasant program of early string quartets by Beethoven, Debussy, and Brahms. The ensemble includes Alexander Pavlovsky (Violin I), Sergei Bresler (Violin II), Ori Kam (Viola), and Kyril Zlotnikov (cello) – musicians who met at conservatory, and since have toured the world and signed a record deal with the highly exclusive label Harmonia Mundi.

Hearing a work when the composer is in the audience always adds something to the occasion and the performance, and we’re fortunate in Durham that this seems to happen quite frequently. This evening’s concert by the Allegri String Quartet, held in the music department as part of the University’s Musicon series included the première of Anthony Payne’s String Quartet No. 2, and in a few words before the performance, the composer reminded us that he studied music at Durham in the 1950s.Read full review... | |
