A mysterious alchemy occurs when orchestral scores are heard played on two pianos. Rhythms become tauter, highly sprung, harmonies crystallise, tiny details of the music’s inner workings emerge with new clarity and focus. Debussy and Stravinsky are heard afresh in piano arrangements by the composers. Zimmerman’s work (itself an arrangement of an orchestral score) teases us with fragments from Beethoven and Bach to Boogie-Woogie and quotes directly from Jeux, with which it shares a fluidity, quicksilver changes of direction and almost improvisatory air. The controlled venom, intricate organisation and relentless impetus of Stravinsky’s infamous Rite fi nd a parallel in Boulez’s innovative Structures – precisely and minutely organised but with a momentum, percussive power and glittering brilliance that makes an explosive, visceral impact. There will be a 30-minute interval. | ||

Twee eveneens zeer indrukwekkende Etudes voor piano van Ligeti vormen de grondstof voor een bewerking voor ensemble door de Deense componist Hans Abrahamsen.
Tussen het pianogeweld van Ligeti en De Vries vormt Gougalon van de Koreaanse Ligeti-leerlinge Unsuk Chin een gelaagd en gevarieerd ensemblewerk. Met humor en momenten van ontroering verwerkt ze een jeugdherinnering aan Koreaanse straatartiesten tot ‘imaginaire volksmuziek’. In 2011 voerde Asko|Schönberg dit laatste werk al eens met veel succes uit.

| Muziekgebouw aan ’t IJ: Main Hall, Amsterdam, Piet Heinkade 1, Amsterdam 1019 BR, Netherlands Saturday 21-Dec-13 08:15pm Tamara Stefanovich De Tweede sonate van Boulez is een spraakmakend werk met een duizelingwekkende partituur. Berucht veeleisend en met per maat soms evenveel aanwijzingen voor de speler als in een heel sonatedeel van Beethoven bij elkaar. De zeer getalenteerde jonge Servische pianiste Tamara Stefanovich – excellente leerling van meesterpianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard – gaat in dit concert de uitdaging aan. Menig gevierd pianist zal haar hierom bewonderen.
Stefanovich is zeer goed thuis in de muziek van Pierre Boulez, een van de belangrijkste componisten van de afgelopen eeuw. ‘Boulez klonk nog nooit zo overtuigend,’ aldus Gramophone toen Stefanovich het integrale pianowerk opnam. Zij speelt ook bagatellen van om beurten Beethoven en Bártok – kleine, spitse, veelzeggende stukjes waarin de twee componisten elkaar in dit concert de bal lijken toe te spelen.
