Many composers would be delighted to be sharing the bill with Pergolesi, particularly if the ratio of programmed pieces were 2:1 in their favour. Judith Bingham combined composing and singing careers for many years, but she now concentrates solely on composing. However, she does – as she confessed in a YouTube interview – compose unconsciously in “breath lengths”. I had not heard this confession before attending the concert but was aware of a natural feel to the music.

This near sell-out concert at the Barbican was intended as a purely vocal programme, ranging from 1710 to 1736 and featuring two female vocalists accompanied by baroque specialists The English Concert. Expertly led from the organ by Harry Bicket, the orchestra played with spirit and their rendering of Handel's Concerto Grosso Op. 6 in place of the programmed Salve Regina by Porpora, was a pleasant interlude (although the well known rather dry acoustic of the concert hall did little to help) but the main acts were the vocal works of Vivaldi and Pergolesi.

Early music ensembles have become an established feature in the late night prom slot. In the calm and relaxed late night setting, the warm, articulate sound of period instruments can create a wonderful intimacy within the vast space of the Royal Albert Hall.
Thursday night saw the Proms debut of the Early Opera Company directed by its founder Christian Curnyn, with a well-devised programme marking the tercentenaries of W. F. Bach, Thomas Arne and G. B. Pergolesi.
