| Regent Hall, London, 275 Oxford Street, London W1C 2DJ, United Kingdom Friday 31-May-13 01:00pm Lunchtime Jazz The Royal Academy of Music presents a lunchtime concert of jazz. Sam Rapley is a up and coming young tenor player currently based in London, studying at the Royal Academy of Music with Stan Sulzmann. Originally a classical clarinettist, Rapley switched to jazz saxophone in his mid teens. Since then he has played with the likes of Dave Douglas, Iain Ballamy, James Taylor Quartet, Mike Walker, and has supported John Taylor Trio with his own band."
Sam says - the trio is a new project which is co-led by Alex Munk (guitar), Matt Robinson (piano) and myself (saxophone). We all studied together at the Royal Academy of Music and wanted to form a group more akin to a chamber ensemble rather than the traditional jazz small group setting. The reason for this was to open up new musical possibilities in the way that we write for the group and also to allow us to play in some different venues, such as this, which make us play very differently to how we would if we were playing in a jazz club.Price type: Free | ||

| Orangery Sanssouci: Raffael Hall, Potsdam, Orangery Sanssouci, Potsdam, Germany Wednesday 12-Jun-13 08:00pm Hardanger Violin meets Saxophone Music from a 16th century, Scandinavian collection
Newly interpreted in an exciting
Early-Fusion-ProjectIn the 16th century a clergyman from the Finnish town of Turku, which was then ruled by Sweden, put together a collection of "pious singings" (Piae Cantiones) for the students of the cathedral school. Since it was published in the then "Swedish" city of Greifswald, the precious treasures survived for future generations. Some of the melodies have Scandinavian origins, some are "imported" from Germany, Bohemia and the Mediterranean region and often date back into medieval times. The ENSEMBLE LA CHIMERA refer to their original programme concept as "Early Fusion. The musicians combine old instruments like lutes and violas da gamba with Norway’s traditional Hardanger violin and the modern saxophone – a surprising and imaginative transfer of sounds between the ages.

| Beethoven-Haus, Bonn, Bonn, Germany Monday 9-Sep-13 08:00pm Luxury, peace and pleasure The existential big-city imagery of Charles Baudelaire, characterized by loneliness, has inspired numerous composers, including Claude Debussy and Erik Satie. This recital is devoted to his poems, transformed into musical pictures, to Roger Hanschel’s limpid saxophone sounds, and Oskar Pastior’s cryptic metamorphosis of "Harmonie du soir". A concert that glows like the picture by Henri Matisse, whose title is taken from Baudelaire’s "Les fleurs du mal": "Luxe, calme et volupté" – "Luxury, peace, and pleasure".
Intonations to "Harmonie du soir" by Charles Baudelaire alternating with the "Karmic Episode" für solo saxophone.

Grammy voor Best New Artist.
saxofonist Joe Lovano of drummer Jack DeJohnette, ‘one of the greatest musicians in jazz history’ (New
York Times).
