| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 6-Jun-13 04:30pm Brilliance and Beauty Brilliant in their beauty and power, these four exhilarating works are the perfect launch for our Festival. Beethoven’s Piano Sonata is one of the most profound spiritual pieces ever composed. From the first downbeat, Chaminade’s Flute Concertino is instantly recognizable for its incredible beauty. These pieces are joined by two gorgeous twentieth century compositions that epitomize the interplay and complicated teamwork that is the hallmark of great chamber music. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 7-Jun-13 08:00pm Move to the Music Dance and music make perfect bedfellows, and while none of this program's pieces have been choreographed, they all find inspiration in dance forms. Playful with a hint of the ironic, Hindemith's Kleine Kammermusik is only "little" in name. Its dance-like rhythms include a fun waltz and a melody worthy of imbibing at Oktoberfest. We usually hear Rachmaninoff's Morceaux de salon for piano, but this set of dance forms is perfect for chamber instruments. An early work, Dvořák's Sextet is replete with folk idioms and dances from his native Czechoslovakia that are a whirlwind of virtuosity. Chamber pieces performed by three of the best student ensembles of the week are sure to move you. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Saturday 8-Jun-13 08:00pm Dramatic Flair The pure drama of these masterpieces of orchestral repertoire will make anyone a lover of classical music. The intense virtuosity required showcases our Festival participant orchestra and guest conductor Larry Rachleff.
Mozart was the master of orchestral and operatic spectacle, and you’ll easily understand why Prague was deep in “Mozart mania” when he wrote this majestic symphony.
Brahms’ and Dvořák’s exotic dances are among the most flamboyant classical works ever written and made both composers legendary.
The Festival welcomes the return of former student participant David Coucheron, now concertmaster of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, as he performs Bruch’s lyrical violin concerto No. 1. | ||

| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 13-Jun-13 04:30pm Songs of Amour Song is always beautiful whether with or without words. Tower's vibrant work Rising is a lovely blend of tones and color. Comprised of a string quartet plus flute, this unique ensemble has memories of Dvořák in its resplendent rise. It is joined by one of the last works of the great composer Max Bruch. You'll love hearing three of his set of eight pieces for clarinet, viola, and piano. These instruments exude warmth and splendor, and the three selections are simply gorgeous. The concert takes a turn to the many colors of love when words join the song. Cabaret is a rich tradition in which many classical composers have dabbled. You'll be caught in a romantic swoon and sway to these often jazz-infused melodies. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 14-Jun-13 08:00pm A Musical Melange This blend of Italian, French, and Russian music with a sprinkling of strings, piano and woodwinds results in a melodic and colorful feast. A pinch of Bach permeates Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, a work of stark emotional power. Poulenc’s jazzy sextet, described as “very fast and fiery” by the composer himself, is infectiously delectable. The chance to hear the only surviving chamber work by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi is a delicious treat. This magnificent masterpiece will make you wish Verdi had written more instrumental music. And for dessert, enjoy two surprises from the best student ensembles of the week. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Saturday 15-Jun-13 08:00pm A Walk in Nature Music may be at its most touching when it turns to the poetic and pastoral. Copland’s Appalachian Spring is a magnum opus of Americana. Presented in its chamber orchestra version, this masterpiece portrays sincere happiness as a young couple embarks on a new life centered on the unassuming joys of country life. An exceptionally poetic work, the Symphonic Variations of French composer César Franck is a virtuosic tour de force for the solo piano and will be emotionally powerful in the hands of Susan Starr. Beethoven is known for music that thunders, however this painting of nature is sublime. Of Fantasia fame, Symphony No. 6 is replete with country songs, brooks, and celebrations, as well as a vivid thunderstorm. | ||

| Holley Hall, Sarasota, FL, 709 North Tamiami Trail, Sarasota, FL 34236, United States Thursday 20-Jun-13 04:30pm The Power of Music You’ll be awed by the raw fervor of these pieces. Though intimate in the size of its performing forces, chamber music is every bit as commanding an emotional as the great orchestral masterworks. Brahms’ Sonata for Cello and Piano is expressive, intense, and forceful. The cello sings in this incredible work of genius. Baroque music is more known for complicated melodies than the more emotional Romantic Era. However, Telemann shows us that Baroque music can be as poignant and expressive. The Baal Shem Suite is a distinctly personal piece and an ode to the composer’s Jewish background. | ||

| Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Friday 21-Jun-13 08:00pm Fall in Love Love in all its forms and complexity is the subject of this concert. You’ll fall in love all over again with Mozart through his mischievous string quintet, suffused with a blend of cheer and vigor with deeper, more serious emotions. Wagner offered perhaps the most romantic gift of all time in his Siegfried Idyll, a tender birthday present given to his wife on Christmas morning. Intimate and cozy, this work’s soft beauty is compelling.Harbison turns to familial love in Songs America Loves to Sing. Instrumental versions of beloved songs from his childhood - and yours - are woven together into a complex counterpoint that is sometimes melancholy, sometimes witty, sometimes impish but always poignant. You’ll also fall in love with two of the best student ensembles of the week. | Sarasota Opera House, Sarasota, FL, Sarasota, FL, United States Saturday 22-Jun-13 08:00pm A Celebratory Finale Making his Festival debut, conductor Nicholas McGegan’s infectious joy will transport you into these three vibrant pieces. Handel’s masterpiece is among the most popular Baroque works. You’ll enjoy its stately elegance and effusive cheer. Mozart himself described his Concerto No. 16 as music “to make the performer sweat.” As one of America’s preeminent performers of Mozart’s music, Robert Levin is the ultimate pianist to truly showcase this great work. Our Festival season ends in stormy Scotland, with a robust symphony by Mendelssohn. Inspired by the landscape and ruins of Scotland, this is a work justifiably beloved by generations and an impressive finale for the 49th Sarasota Music Festival. | ||
