A pinch of Bach permeates Shostakovich’s Piano Quintet, a work of stark emotional power. Poulenc’s jazzy sextet, described as “very fast and fiery” by the composer himself, is infectiously delectable. The chance to hear the only surviving chamber work by opera composer Giuseppe Verdi is a delicious treat. This magnificent masterpiece will make you wish Verdi had written more instrumental music.
