The talent was top-shelf at Alice Tully Hall on Sunday evening, kicking off 2013 for the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center with a cello sonata by Brahms, and trios by Dvořák and Haydn. Emerson String Quartet violinist Philip Setzer joined co-artistic directors of the Society David Finckel on (cello) and Wu Han (piano). The concertgoers filled the hall to near-capacity, braving New York’s flu season for the chance to hear the trio perform the Dvořák trios that the group has recently recorded.

Ingolf Dahl’s Concerto à tre is a three-movement piece (but played without breaks) for clarinet, cello and violin. Although it was a very fluid piece, there were many different elements within the music. The violin often played a classical-sounding melody, whereas the rhythm, drive and repetition of the piece at times reminded me of the American minimalists. The second movement conjured up images of a vast, desolate Nordic landscape while still being very comforting listening. The London Mozart Trio have a concert schedule dominated by London venues, so their performance at the Leeds College of Music as part of the city's International Jewish Performing Arts Festival on Monday was a rare opportunity for those outside the capital to hear their beautiful music. Since their formation in 1989, they have attracted critical acclaim for their interpretations of a wide range of pieces, but somewhat surprisingly, they don't play very much Mozart.
